From the granite of Yosemite to the sandstone of canyon country, our co-owner Paul has spent his life on rock. Earlier this month he climbed El Capitan for the 43rd time, at 66 years old!

El Capitan is a 3,000-foot wall, and that climb is part of a life of climbing that began in Yosemite Valley and took him all the way to Baffin Island.

On Friday, November 6, at 7 pm, he’ll tell the rest of the story in person at the Dreamland Office in Kanab, after we watch the short film “Land of Giants.”

In 2021 we celebrated our 20th anniversary with a party and a parade float, and yes, the dinosaurs came too.

For our 25th, we’re doing it again! (But we can’t promise the dinosaurs will come this time.) Join us on Saturday, November 7, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the stage at the Best Friends Roadhouse in Kanab.

There will be live music from Gundy & The Gurus and a food truck, and we’ll draw the winner of our anniversary giveaway live, with the whole Dreamland crew there to celebrate!

Say hello to Paul and Sunny in these photos, wedged into a slot canyon and grinning as if they planned to stay all day.⁠

They have always loved adventure, and in March 2020 they bought Dreamland after booking a trip as guests first, just to see what they were buying.⁠

Ten days after they signed the papers, COVID shut everything down, which was its own kind of tight squeeze. But we’ve kept growing, and this year Dreamland turns 25!⁠

That’s us getting back into the car and out of the wash at Peekaboo Slot Canyon, near Kanab, UT, as the water comes through.

We were outside the slot canyon, but a wash is part of the same flood path, so staying out of the slot doesn’t keep you out of danger. When you see or hear a flash flood coming, get out of the wash and up to higher ground right away.

This one came without the signs we normally watch for here, in a drainage this small, so don’t count on a warning. A roar from up canyon is reason enough to move!

Who knows what that is?

Clue: Those gray clumps are owl pellets, the undigestible parts of a meal, fur and bones, coughed back up a few hours after eating.

Basically the receipt for whatever that owl had for dinner.

Does it snow in Kanab and surroundings in winter? Sometimes.

Do we stop our tours? No! Unless it represents a risk for safety, we do tours all year long.

For example, a dusting like this just turns South Coyote Buttes into a completely different place, with the snow sitting on top of all that orange and red.

Every canyon wall like this is basically a fossil weather report!

Those diagonal lines are a fossilized weather vane, each one marking the slip face of an ancient dune, angled in whatever direction the wind was blowing when this was still loose sand.

Most of these across the Navajo Sandstone point south, so the wind out here stayed pretty consistent for millions of years before any of it turned to rock.
