Racing the clock to get Fossil Lake Safari ready for opening day this Saturday! We’re hard at work excavating fresh rock so it has time to dry, and putting the final touches in place to welcome everyone out to the quarry. See you soon...

Thanks to an unusually warm winter, we’re able to access the quarry much earlier than usual this year! Typically, lingering snow keeps us from even reaching the location until the first week of May, so this is pretty unprecidented.

There’s still a few weeks of prep work ahead before we’re ready for visitors, but we’re excited to announce that opening day has been moved up to May 9th.

Pre-bookings for the season are now live at FossilSafari.com

Now we just need Mother Nature to hold off on any late-season snowstorms 🤞

Another incredible find from this past summer at our Fossil Lake Safari quarry 🐢

This is an exceptionally rare “pond turtle” from the genus Echmatemys. Only a handful of complete specimens like this have ever been discovered in the Green River Formation.

This specimen was found early in the season by one of our team members while splitting leftover rock from the customer rows. It was discovered ventral-side up, then carefully flipped and prepared entirely by hand under a microscope. The preparation alone took 100+ hours, and the results speak for themselves.

The turtle is currently on display — and available — at the .fossils booth at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show.

This incredible little crocodile we uncovered during the 2024 quarry season is now on display at .gallery in Tucson! If you’re in town for the massive Tucson show, it’s absolutely worth stopping by to see it in person.

The specimen is truly exceptional, with rare soft-tissue skin preservation along the tail and even the remains of a Phareodus preserved in its stomach. We first spotted it in cross-section while pulling rock from the quarry wall with the backhoe.

Nearly a year and more than 500 hours of meticulous preparation went into bringing this fossil to life—and the result is something special.

A super rare, baby Gar that was just split out by a guest at Fossil Lake Safari today. Gar's are one of the rarest fish in the Green River Formation and can reach impressive sizes, but to find a juvenile like this is incredibly rare.
