Lots of fossil fish (Knightia) on this rock. The split happened to occur along a single bedding plane we refer to as the "puddle layer." It contains clusters of similarly sized Knightia. Some have speculated that this layer may represent a time when the lake's water level dropped, trapping fish in small pools as it dried up.

People often ask what the drive out to Fossil Lake Safari is like. This video gives you a good sense of the road conditions. You’ll turn off State Highway 233 onto Dempsey Road, a dirt road that leads about 8 miles to the quarry.

Except for some sections of the road with some pretty bad washboarding Dempsey Road isn't too bad and a typical passenger car or RV will have no problem getting to the quarry.
