This is easily one of the coolest experiences my boyfriend & I have done — who knew you could go digging for fossils so close to home!?

The closest town is Kemmerer, Wyoming & then you’ll have to drive on an easy dirt road to get to the quarry.

It is only open seasonally through roughly September so make sure to go soon!

For those that are making the trip out to join us at Fossil Lake Safari, there is a new dinner option in the town of Kemmerer! Bootleggers has reopened as a steakhouse under new management, serving great food and drinks. They will be also opening an ourdoor patio in the near future for the summer. So check them out after you work up an appetite at the quarry.

A beautiful fossil fish (Priscacara serrata) found by a guest at Fossil Lake Safari the other day!

Priscacara is one of the less common fish species found at the quarry and can reach sizes of up to 15 inches. This one is about average size, but still a fantastic find.

The exceptional preservation of these 52-million-year-old fossil fish is due in large part to the bottom of the ancient lake being anoxic, meaning it had very low oxygen levels. This helped keep scavengers away and slowed decomposition.

Rivers feeding the lake carried calcium carbonate eroded from the surrounding limestone mountains. Over time, this calcium carbonate precipitated out of the water column, slowly covering the fish.

So, unlike many well-preserved fossils that were buried rapidly, the remarkable preservation in Fossil Lake was the result of very slow burial under ideal lake conditions.

Update: We will reopen tomorrow, Thursday, 05/20. However, the access road is still very muddy, so we highly recommend using a 4WD or AWD vehicle. If you attempt to drive a 2WD vehicle up to the quarry, you risk getting stuck.

We got a couple inches of snow at the Fossil Lake Safari quarry last night. That’s Wyoming for you: 80+ degrees one day, snow a few days later.

There isn’t any more snow in the forecast, but we’ll be closing the quarry tomorrow, May 19, while the snow melts. The access road is already becoming muddy and unsafe. Most vehicles won’t be able to make it in, and it could be dangerous for those that try. We already had one person slide off the road today on their way to the quarry.

We plan to reopen as normal on Wednesday.

Hopefully this is the last snow of the season, but weather at elevation in Wyoming can be unpredictable. Random snowstorms can happen even into July, so please check the weather and road conditions before your trip.

A fantastic fossil stingray (Heliobatis) was split out this morning by a guest at the Fossil Lake Safari quarry!

It was an excellent split for such a rare fossil, with the entire stingray preserved in a single piece of rock on the left side, mostly hidden beneath a thin layer of limestone. Because of their size, fossil stingrays are often found in multiple pieces and must be reassembled during preparation.

A visiting school group uncovered a huge slab packed with 52-million-year-old fossil fish, including Knightia and Diplomystus. Many of the fish are still partially hidden beneath the rock’s surface, making this an exciting window into an ancient lake ecosystem waiting to be revealed.
