After the weather finally gave us a break, diggers were back out at the quarries today — and one lucky fossil hunter struck pure gold! A juvenile Stingray was discovered right here in the heart of the Fossil Butte area, one of the richest paleontological sites on Earth. 🌍⛏️
This 50-million-year-old gem is now in our hands for professional preparation, and it is going to be absolutely STUNNING — a beautiful negative and positive display piece straight out of ancient Fossil Lake.

🦈 A Rare Find 50 Million Years in the Making.
This has been an incredible season. Bringing a professional geologist onto our team has been a game-changer — from detailed quarry mapping to walking guests through the stratigraphy of the Green River Formation, their knowledge has added a whole new dimension to the fossil dig experience here at the Fossil Butte Member.
And today reminded us exactly why this place is so special.
While carefully working through the finely laminated lacustrine shale layers, our geologist uncovered a juvenile stingray (Heliobatis radians) — only the second specimen of its kind we've recovered from this specific stratigraphic horizon in 20 years.
Juvenile Heliobatis are genuinely rare. Their cartilaginous skeletons are fragile, and the conditions required to preserve them in such detail are exceptional. Finding one within these particular layers takes both patience and a trained eye — and today, that patience paid off in a big way.
We're proud to share discoveries like this with the people who come here to learn, dig, and connect with deep time. Whether you're a seasoned fossil hunter or just curious about what's hidden in the rock, there's nothing quite like the Fossil Butte Member.

Our citizen scientists are doing incredible work uncovering Earth's ancient secrets within the Fossil Butte Member of the Green River Formation. By carefully documenting stratigraphic markers — the distinct sediment layers that act as a timeline locked in stone — our young geologists are helping piece together a 52-million-year-old freshwater lake ecosystem.
The recent discovery of a bat fossil opens a fascinating new chapter. Bats from this Eocene epoch are extraordinarily rare, and every specimen helps researchers better understand early mammal evolution and the ancient environment of what is now southwest Wyoming.
