Kealia 604 is a two-bedroom with an open floor plan, so the kitchen, the dining table and the living room all face the same wall of glass and the same ocean. Both bedrooms overlook the water, a king in one and a queen in the other. There is a tiled walk-in shower, air conditioning in the main bedroom and the living room, and a washer and dryer inside the unit.

Kealia Resort sits on Sugar Beach, the long, calm stretch of North Kihei. From up here you watch the swimmers, the surfers and the turtles, and in winter the humpbacks in the bay.

Koholā. The humpback whale.

Humpback whales are generally seen in Hawaiian waters from November through April, with the peak from January through March, and roughly half of the North Pacific's humpbacks make the trip. The federal sanctuary that protects them uses the Hawaiian name, koholā.

The first spouts of the season show up while it is still autumn on the mainland. Keep an eye on the water from the lanai.

This week's letter: the whales come back before the crowds do.

Whale season in Hawaii runs roughly from November through April, and the peak is January through March. But the first humpbacks are sometimes spotted in October, and almost everybody who comes to see them books the peak. This letter is about the weeks before it.

There are fewer whales in early December than in February, and more arrive every week. Watch from an ocean-view lanai in Kihei, Ma'alaea or West Maui, and on the water stay at least a hundred yards from a humpback, drones included. On our calendar, the first half of December is the most open stretch of the whole winter.

A remodeled one-bedroom on the water, built for two.

Kihei Beach 608 was redone top to bottom, with marble tiling, granite counters and new cabinets in the kitchen and the bathroom, and unobstructed ocean views the moment you open the door. A king bed, central air conditioning, ceiling fans, and a washer and dryer inside the unit. It sleeps two, on purpose.

Leave the lanai door open at night and the ocean is the last thing you hear. In the morning the shoreline runs three miles north toward Ma'alaea, and most mornings you will have a lot of it to yourself.

Nine in ten of the condos we manage look out at the ocean.

Most of them are oceanfront, and the rest look at the water from a little further back. That matters most in winter. Humpback whales are generally in Hawaiian waters from November through April, with the peak from January through March, and a window onto the ocean is the best seat there is.

Hawaiian-inspired Filipino and Asian food, from a chef who spent twenty years in Roy Yamaguchi's kitchens.

Chef Joey Macadangdang opened his own place in 2015, and it has since turned up on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The Napili room opens at eight in the morning and runs to eight at night every day, which makes it the easy answer to breakfast, lunch and dinner on the west side. Order the Garlic Kauai Shrimp here, since it is only on the Napili menu.

There is a second Joey's in Kahului, open Tuesday to Saturday.

Family-owned since 1997, when it started as a five-table outdoor cafe in Makawao.

The Kihei room runs on island fish. Chef Carlos Torres does a macadamia nut crusted mahi, a blackened mahi mahi with Kumu Farms papaya salsa, and spicy ahi nachos for the table. Lunch from eleven, dinner from five, and a happy hour from half past three to five that is worth planning a late afternoon around.

A one-bedroom on the water, with Ma'alaea Bay from the table outside.

Hono Kai B7 is small and easy. The ocean is in view from the living room, the bedroom and the lanai, and from the table outside you look across the bay toward Makena. The bedroom has a queen bed, its own air conditioning and shoji doors, and the sofa sleeper in the living room takes it to four.

Hono Kai is a small resort on Ma'alaea Bay with an oceanfront pool and a barbecue area. Sea turtles swim past out front, and in the winter months the humpbacks arrive. Ma'alaea is the middle of the island, so Wailea, the West Side and the road up the mountain are all within reach.

New on our books in North Kihei: Kealia 608, on the top floor.

It is a one-bedroom on the sixth floor, with Kealia Pond in the windows as you walk in and the ocean from the private lanai. There is a full kitchen with full-size appliances, air conditioning in the living room, ceiling fans throughout, and a private washer and dryer, so a two-week or month-long stay is easy. There is covered parking in the garage and an elevator straight up.

From mid-December to mid-April, the lanai is where you watch for the humpbacks.

Hoʻomaha. To rest, to take a vacation; to pause. Also a rest in music.

Hoʻomaha is the word for a vacation, and it is also the word for a rest in music, the beat where nobody plays. That is a better definition of a holiday than most of the ones we use. When the schools break, people say ua hoʻomaha nā kula.

The point of the word is the stopping. Leave a few days of a trip with nothing planned and you will find out what it means.
