Re-introducing The Joy Theatre 🎭

As Liberty Mountain celebrates the history of our community, we are also reminded that the places where we tell our stories have histories of their own. Few buildings have meant more to Kings Mountain’s performing arts community than The Joy Theatre.

It all began with an idea.

In 1942, brothers David and Charlie Cash envisioned a theatre in the heart of Kings Mountain. They purchased the former Davis Easy-Pay Store lot on Railroad Avenue and began making plans. Blueprints for the theatre were first drawn in 1947 before being revised in September 1948 by architect Marion Rossiter Marsh.

The Cash family invited the community to help name the theatre by holding a contest. Grace Neisler Page submitted the winning entry: “The Joy.”

On June 1, 1949, The Joy Theatre officially opened its doors with Betty Grable starring in “The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend.” For decades, it welcomed generations of Kings Mountain families through its doors.

In 2001, Kings Mountain Little Theatre purchased The Joy and began restoring it to its former glory. Today, it continues to bring our community together through live theatre, music and other special events.

This fall, we invite you to become part of this story by experiencing Liberty Mountain inside one of Kings Mountain’s most treasured historic landmarks ⛰️💥
