Kodiak wildlife abounds right downtown, from dueling 2000 pound male sea lions, to eagles’ nests with babes, sea otters grooming and even a family of orcas on the hunt; these sightings are common in the harbor and channel if you keep your eyes on the water.

Wildlife abounds right in downtown Kodiak! From eagle’s nests with young babes, to dueling 2000 pound sea lions, sea otters grooming and families of orcas on the hunt, these are regular sightings down at the harbors. Further out by the rivers and beaches, we may spot the Kodiak red fox exploring the tide line or a Kodiak bear digging for isopods. Both of these species exist nowhere else in the world! Sitka black tail deer and snowshoe hare were introduced to Kodiak and regularly make an appearance on the road system.

The first Remote Hike of the year was a resounding success, boasting breathtaking vistas throughout. The half-day hike evolved into a full-day trek as participants explored meandering side trails and paused at cherished spots for a leisurely picnic and conversation. The unplanned extension allowed for a special encounter – the year’s first bear sighting. We reveled in the rare opportunity to observe the bear foraging for isopods along the beach, its antics captivating the hikers. After roughly 10 minutes, the bear took flight. The timing of the hike’s conclusion coincided perfectly with high tide, with the sun casting a turquoise glow across the water. What an excellent start to the hiking season!
