Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, the world changed forever. The attacks of that day impacted the United States as well as communities and families across the globe. It is a day etched into everyone's memory, moments that seem as if time stood still.

At John Hall's Alaska, we remain incredibly grateful for the countless individuals who made sacrifices, answered the call to serve, rushed toward danger to help others and stood united in the face of attack. We honor the courage of first responders, military members, volunteers and all who were part of that day and its aftermath. The service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

For so many, including many John Hall supporters, September 11th is also deeply personal. We remember exactly where we stood, learning of the attacks. In the early morning hours of Alaska's daylight on September 11th, John Sr. received a phone call with a simple message from a longtime employee and dear friend, Earl Lamberton: "Turn on the TV." Like millions of others, he watched as the events unfolded and realized, heartbroken, that the world would never be the same.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember those we lost, honor those who served and reflect on the resilience, unity and strength that emerged from the United States in the face of tragedy. It is truly a day we will never forget, and a reminder of the enduring spirit that continues to unite us all.

Another Grand Slam Alaska adventure is in the books! Tour Manager Steve F. recently wrapped up AK157, guiding guests through an unforgettable journey filled with glacier views, time on the water, Alaska traditions and plenty of memorable moments along the way.

This group had the opportunity to experience Alaska from multiple perspectives, including incredible time on the water. A cruise with Stan Stephens Cruises through Prince William Sound brought guests up close to massive tidewater glaciers and the dramatic coastal scenery that makes Alaska so extraordinary. In Denali, some guests chose to add even more adventure to their trip with an optional excursion through Denali Raft Adventures, taking in stunning views of the Alaska Range and Alaska's wild landscapes from the river.

One of the more unexpected highlights of the tour was a visit to Santa Claus House in North Pole, where guests had the chance to meet Santa himself and enjoy a little Christmas spirit in the heart of an Alaska summer.

Of course, no Interior Alaska adventure would be complete without a stop at Trail Breaker Kennel. Guests learned about Alaska's rich mushing heritage, met the talented sled dogs, and spent some quality time with a few adorable puppies that quickly became fan favorites. Perhaps some of the guests – who met Santa – will ask for a puppy this Christmas!

From cruising past awe-inspiring glaciers to exploring Denali National Park to experiencing Alaska's sled dog culture, the tour was packed with the unforgettable moments that make Grand Slam Alaska such a special journey. Another Grand Slam Alaska adventure is in the books! Tour Manager Mark L. recently wrapped up AK156, guiding guests through some of Interior and Southcentral Alaska's most memorable experiences.

From the comfort of the luxury John Hall’s Alaska motorcoach, this group enjoyed many of the highlights that make Grand Slam Alaska a guest favorite year after year. Along the way, they explored stunning landscapes, connected with Alaska's rich history and culture, and shared plenty of unforgettable moments together.

Of course, the photos from Trail Breaker Kennel in Fairbanks may have stolen the spotlight this time around. Guests met the sled dogs, learned about Alaska's proud mushing heritage, and, judging by the smiles, fell in love with more than a few adorable puppies along the way!

The adventure also included GoldStar Service aboard the Alaska Railroad, time in Denali National Park and Preserve and visits to some of Alaska's most iconic destinations before continuing south toward Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. Many guests then extended their Alaska vacation with a cruise aboard Celebrity Summit, exploring the glaciers, wildlife and communities of Southeast Alaska.

Alaska's seasonal traditions offer a unique glimpse into the communities and experiences that make a visit to the 49th state so memorable. These weekly highlights share real moments from travelers' perspectives, offering an authentic look at a John Hall's Alaska journey. And as always, a picture is worth a thousand words.

This photo, shared by guest Carlene S. during the 2022 Fall Colors of Alaska and Canadian Rockies 40th Anniversary Highway trip, captures a fun stop at the Alaska State Fair. Three guests are gathered in front of a giant pumpkin, grown by Anchorage resident Dale Marshall and weighing an incredible 2,147 pounds. The massive pumpkin won the Midnight Sun Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off and set a new Alaska state record that still stands today.

The Fall Colors of Alaska and Canadian Rockies tour, which departs once every two years, is currently underway and will visit the Alaska State Fair tomorrow. As this year's guests explore the fairgrounds, they'll have the chance to see this year’s championship pumpkin, grown by – fittingly – Dale Marshall, who won for the 9th year in a row with his 2026 pumpkin weighing 1,426 pounds!

Whether it's seeing record-breaking pumpkins, enjoying local traditions or discovering the vibrant colors of autumn across Alaska and the Canadian Rockies, these are the experiences that help make each journey unforgettable.

One thing Alaska and Minnesota have in common? They take their state fairs very seriously. They even overlap: Alaska’s State Fair runs from August 21 – September 7 (closed on select Tuesdays & Wednesdays) and the Minnesota State Fair runs August 27 – September 7 this year.

The Fall Colors of Alaska and Canadian Rockies travelers begin their journey soon, and one of the highlights ahead is a stop at the Alaska State Fair on Day 3.

With offices in both Alaska and Minnesota, John Hall’s Alaska couldn't help comparing the top food at the Alaska vs. Minnesota state fairs!

Minnesota’s State Fair (the Great Minnesota Get-Together) is known for its creative foods-on-a-stick and over-the-top fair fare. This year, one of the most talked-about new foods is Pickle Pie – which is pretty much exactly what is sounds like: Pie crust filled with a blend of chopped pickles, pickle juice and cream cheese – topped with savory whipped frosting made with ranch and Cholula Hot Sauce. And garnished by a pickle, of course.

Alaska brings its own flavor to the competition. The state is known for its overly large vegetables (because of their much longer summer sunlight hours) and the fair is home to the Giant Cabbage Weigh-Off and the Midnight Sun Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off. Along with Alaska favorites like fresh seafood and buffalo burger, this year’s Alaska State Fair is serving up a Donut Burger – a hamburger patty, cheese, bacon and optional fried egg sandwiched between two glazed donuts.
