Who was Tony “The Ant” Spilotro?

If you’ve seen Casino, you already know a version of his story.

Tony Spilotro was a Chicago Outfit enforcer sent to Las Vegas in the 1970s to protect the mob’s interests as millions of dollars were being skimmed from Las Vegas casinos.

But one of the stranger chapters of his Las Vegas story happened somewhere you might not expect:

Circus Circus. 🎪

In 1975, Spilotro operated a gift shop right on the Circus Circus midway — surrounded by clowns, carnival games and families on vacation.

The shop put Spilotro inside the casino at a time when gaming authorities were increasingly interested in his activities. When regulators discovered the arrangement, Circus Circus owner Jay Sarno ultimately bought the shop back from Spilotro — reportedly for substantially more than Spilotro had paid for it.

Spilotro became one of the most infamous figures of Las Vegas's mob era. In 1986, he and his brother Michael were murdered, their bodies later discovered buried in an Indiana cornfield.

His life would eventually help inspire Joe Pesci’s character Nicky Santoro in Martin Scorsese’s Casino.

And that's only one chapter of Tony Spilotro's Circus Circus story.

Pilar Santa Cruz: The one madam Block 16's 1939 raid couldn't touch.

In 1939, the city raided Block 16: Las Vegas's original red light district, and its eight madams were taken to court.

Pilar Santa Cruz, one of the longest operating madams on the block walked away clean; her business license was in good order. She ran the Red Front Saloon and brothel for over 20 years, adapted to a boarding home when Block 16 shut down, and died in 1947 leaving behind a real estate legacy that attests to her business acumen and local contribution.

In 1941, women were running seven of Block 16's nine resorts.

It matters that she is remembered as more than a footnote.
