BLOCK 16 FILES:
You might know Block 16 existed. We’re telling you how it actually operated.
Every week, the women working on the Block — Las Vegas’s Original Red Light District — were examined by a doctor. Friday was the designated day — no exceptions. It was part of the structure, and it was enforced.
Stella Iaconis, who grew up in early Las Vegas and waited tables downtown starting in the late 1920s, remembered it clearly decades later. It was a regulated system.
It’s a system still used in the legal brothels of Nevada today. All the ladies are screened on arrival and given a clean bill of health.
If you’re curious about what Las Vegas like back in the early days, it wasn't completely wild and lawless. There were systems in place that created more order than assumed.
