Do you really need a private guide on every trip or shore excursion? Not always. But in the right place, it can completely change the experience.
In Europe, a great guide can bring places like Paris, Athens, or Rome to life and help you understand what you’re actually seeing instead of just checking sights off a list. In Hawaii, a private guide can be perfect for exploring more of the island, learning about the culture and history, and finding stops you may not discover on your own. And in the Caribbean, we love private guides for certain island tours and shore excursions where you want a more personalized experience than a larger group tour.
They can also be especially helpful on cruise days when time in port is limited and you want to make the most of every hour.
But not every day needs to be guided. Beach days, resort time, places you already know well, or days you intentionally want to wander on your own are usually better left open.
The biggest difference really comes down to the guide themselves. The right guide can turn a sightseeing day or shore excursion into one of the best memories of the entire trip, which is why we’re pretty selective about who we work with.
