Today we caught something on video that I honestly don’t remember ever seeing quite like this before.

Instead of their normal smooth surfacing to breathe, these dolphins were coming up almost vertically — pointing their noses straight toward the sky! 🐬⬆️

It was SO COOL to watch!

This is sometimes described as head-up or vertical surfacing behavior. Dolphins may do this while playing, interacting with one another, maneuvering, or changing direction or depth. If they raise their head far enough that their eyes come above the surface and they actually look around, that’s known as spyhopping. 👀🐬

And here’s another cool dolphin fact: that “nose” pointing toward the sky isn’t actually how they breathe!
A dolphin breathes through the blowhole on top of its head, not through its snout (called the rostrum).

What made today’s encounter even more interesting was watching several dolphins interacting while doing it.
Were they playing? Communicating?
Checking out what was happening around them?
With wild dolphins, we don’t always know exactly what motivates a particular behavior — and that’s part of what makes watching them in their natural habitat so incredible.

🌊After all the years and countless hours I’ve spent watching dolphins, I LOVE that they can still show us something we’ve never really witnessed before.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all… the dolphins teach you something new. 💙

We are incredibly honored to announce that our Sea Thunder will be the LEAD VESSEL of the 2026 Little River Patriot’s Day Boat Parade! 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙

This is going to be a very special day on the water as our community comes together to recognize the men and women who have served, protected, cared for, and made a difference in the lives of others.

⭐️ 75 SEATS OF HONOR aboard the Sea Thunder have been designated for our heroes!

We are accepting nominations for Veterans, Active Duty Military, Police, Fire, EMS, First Responders, Healthcare Heroes, Hometown Heroes, and other deserving members of our community.

⚓️ RIDE OF HONOR DETAILS:
📅 Saturday, September 12, 2026
📍 Aboard the Sea Thunder
🇺🇸 Sea Thunder will LEAD the Patriot’s Day Boat Flotilla
🕦 All honored guests must be checked in NO LATER THAN 11:30 AM
🚤 Sea Thunder leaves the dock at 12:00 PM and will head down the Intracoastal Waterway toward the swing bridge, leading the boat parade.
🕑 Event time is approximately 11:30 AM–2:00 PM

Nominate someone whose service, courage, compassion or impact on our community deserves to be recognized. The first 75 qualifying nominations will be considered, with participation subject to available seating, safety requirements and final event confirmation.

Honorees may ride independently or request one adult companion/support person. If an honoree is unable to safely board or disembark the Sea Thunder, they may designate an adult representative (18+) to ride in their place.
