La Piedra del Peñol, also known as El Peñón de Guatapé, is a massive 220-meter-high granite monolith located near Medellín in Antioquia, Colombia.

History and Atmosphere

• Geological Origins: The giant rock is an inselberg estimated to be millions of years old, composed of quartz, feldspar, and granite.
• The Giant Graffiti: During a fierce territorial dispute between the neighboring towns of Guatapé and El Peñol over who owned the rock, the residents of Guatapé decided to paint the town's name in giant white letters on its face.
They only managed to finish the letter "G" and part of "U" before local protests and legal actions forced them to stop.
• The Reservoir Landscape: The surrounding calm waters are a massive man-made reservoir created in the 1970s for a hydroelectric project. The original town of El Peñol was submerged by the water, and a towering concrete cross now marks that historic site just off the shore.

Specialties and Unique Services

• The Climb: Visitors ascend a zig-zagging staircase built directly into a natural vertical fissure in the rock. The climb consists of roughly 700 to 750 steps utilizing separate paths for ascending and descending.
Summit and Base Amenities: At the top, a multi-level viewing tower offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the emerald-green island labyrinth dotting the reservoir. The summit and base also feature local souvenir shops, casual cafes, and snack bars.
