MANATEES ARE BACK! 🧜‍♀️🧜‍♂️ March is when manatees return from their winter waters. We've had sightings everywhere from AMI to SRQ and they'll continue to arrive for the summer as the water gets warmer. Seems like it's been forever since we last saw them way back last fall. Spending time with these knuckleheads is one of the absolute pleasures of the job and their charismatic charm never wears thin. It'll be good to see some familiar old snouts. They are the sweethearts of the sea for sure! ❤️❤️❤️

Check out the radical changing spots on this squid we found on our dock! & Squid have specialized pigment-containing cells called chromatophores in their skin.These chromatophores are enveloped by muscles that are controlled by the nervous system. When the muscles contract, the chromatophores expand, enlarging the pigmented areas. Conversely, when the muscles relax, the chromatophores shrink, reducing the pigmented areas.Sometimes, as seen here, random color splotches can appear after death, as peripheral neurological activity can take time to cease completely. 🦑
