Today marks the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

On August 6, 1945, at 8:15 a.m. local time, the first atomic bomb used in warfare detonated over Hiroshima, Japan, forever changing the course of history. Tens of thousands of people were killed instantly, and many more died in the days, months, and years that followed from injuries and radiation exposure. The event ushered in the nuclear age and continues to shape global conversations about science, war, and peace.

As the birthplace of the Manhattan Project, Los Alamos holds a unique place in this history.

Join us this evening for Lights for Peace at Ashley Pond Park from 7 to 9 p.m. as our community comes together to remember those affected, reflect on the past, and renew our shared hope for a more peaceful future.

Let's play a new game: Where in Los Alamos am I?

Hint 1: The design of the sidewalk stamp was based on a petroglyph in White Rock Canyon - a pajarito or "little bird".
Hint 2: The pajarito stamp was put in to the sidewalk by the County Public Works Department in the 1990s.
Hint 3: The low structure seen in the distance of this photo was likely occupied around 1225 by Tewa-speaking people.

Post your guesses below! How many hints did it take you to get it?

E is for Engineering:

It may not be very apparent how we use engineering in the National Park Service, but itโ€™s all around, whether you realize it or not! From park infrastructure to engaging exhibits, the wonderful minds of our facilities teams and contractors are on constant display. They add to the enjoyment of this place and enhance the visitor experience.

We hope that you will come explore the Volcano Discovery Center next Saturday, July 18th, for STEM Day at the Caldera to see these great works!
