What is a private reserve or concession on safari, and does it change your trip?

It changes the day. On private land, usually two or three vehicles share a sighting. The area as a whole has far fewer than a national park. And guides can often go off-road.

The lodge is still a highlight. Even a tented camp is the highest form of luxury, and I’d never tell you to skip it. I’d just look at the day as closely as the room.

If you’re comparing camps for a first safari, ask what a day looks like before you decide.

What do you do when your dream trip costs more than your budget?

Don’t shrink the whole thing. Pick where to give a little. Most trips have one place where the money matters most and a few where it barely shows.

What I recommend (and why): figure out which part of the trip you’ll remember, and protect that. Trim everywhere else.

Is Portugal a good spring break destination?

Spring break 2027 lands right around Easter, which is March 28. Most families default to the Caribbean, which means paying peak rates for the busiest week of the year there.

Portugal is the trip a lot of people save for July, when it’s at its hottest and most crowded. Easter there is also far quieter than in Spain or Rome, which is why it’s at the top of my list for 2027.

What I recommend (and why): Lisbon and the Alentejo if you want food, w**e and slow days. Madeira if your crew likes to stay busy outdoors. Both if you can’t choose.

Save this for your spring break planning.

This is the one hour nobody can reach me.

Not my kids. Not my husband. Not someone on my team with an urgent slack message. Not the client who texts at 9pm about dinner reservations in Rome.

Training used to be my job. I trained for the Olympics, and it looked nothing like this. These days it’s a group class in the middle of the day, and I’m just trying to make it through the last round.

Sure, it’s good for my health. But the real reason I go? For one hour, nobody gets to interrupt me 😉

Tell me I’m not the only one using that as motivation.

I say this with love and a little bit of envy — empty nesters won the travel calendar.

No school schedule. No spring break crowds. No paying peak season prices because that’s the only window you have. September in Europe. November on safari. A three-week trip because you actually can.

This is your best travel era. It would be a shame not to use it. 😊

This weekend I was in Temecula for my church’s first ever marriage retreat.

I volunteered to organize it … because that’s what I do. I thought through the arc of the weekend. Where we’d stay, how meals would flow, what the free time could look like.

But I showed up expectant that it would mean something to my own marriage in a way that had nothing to do with the details.

And it did.

Marriage is all the things. If you’re married, you don’t need me to explain further.

What a gift to show up somewhere with your partner and both commit to lean in, learn, and do the work required to move toward the kind of marriage you actually want.

We were led by two people whose knowledge, vulnerability, and love for each other made the whole weekend possible. and Kyle - grateful doesn’t cover it.

But I am. So grateful.
