Seagull Chicks

As early summer arrives, so does a familiar sight along coastal areas and lakeshores: seagulls nesting and caring for their newborn seagull chicks. These graceful birds, often misunderstood and sometimes seen as pests, play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems. Understanding their behavior and knowing how to respectfully interact with them during this sensitive time is essential for their well-being… and yours.

Soon, young seagull chicks will become visible in nests on rooftops in downtown Grand Marais. The awkward fledgling phase will soon follow. During this time, it is very important to learn how to behave around seagull chicks in a safe and legal manner. Leaving these adorable little fluff balls alone is not just about respecting wildlife, it's also the law.

Lupine

Lupine flowers have been spotted in bloom around Cook County! The above photo was captured last week.

Lupine, the purple, pink, and white flowers that bloom in June and July along the North Shore, are as beautiful as they are controversial. Classified as an invasive species that is not native to the North Shore, they are also a favorite amongst many who welcome their bloom at a symbol of the start of summer.
