"Many of the most special moments in the Azores come from the unplanned stops—a surprise seaside viewpoint, a roadside cheese stand, a coffee at a tiny neighborhood café,” writes Indagare senior editor Elizabeth Harvey, who is just back from exploring São Miguel, the largest of the nine-island Portuguese archipelago known as the Azores. “Roads are generally winding and often single-lane; you will likely be delayed at some point on your journey by shuffling cows, a tractor at work or a chicken or two crossing the road—but that’s all part of the romance.”
