Magical Mangroves of the Florida Keys! 🌱
Hey Facebook friends! Next time you’re dreaming of the Florida Keys, don’t just think turquoise waters and coral reefs—dive (or paddle!) into the incredible world of mangroves. These “walking trees” are the unsung heroes lining over 1,800 miles of shoreline in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. They’re not just pretty scenery; they’re vital to everything that makes the Keys paradise!
A Quick History & Why They Matter
Mangroves have been thriving in salty coastal environments for millions of years, helping shape Florida’s ecosystems (some scientists even link their evolution to the development of modern coral reefs!).
In the Keys, three main types rule:
• Red mangroves with their signature prop roots that look like stilts or spider legs.
• Black mangroves (with salty leaves—rub one and taste the salt!).
• White mangroves a bit farther inland.
Historically, they’ve protected the islands from storms, filtered water, and built land by trapping sediment. Sadly, over 60% were lost in Monroe County since the 1950s to development, but protections now help them bounce back. They’re true Florida natives and part of our coastal heritage!

• Baby factories for fish: Up to 90% of commercial and 75% of game fish in South Florida (think snappers, tarpon, and more) spend part of their lives in mangrove nurseries. The tangled roots are like underwater playgrounds shielding them from predators.
• They “walk”: Red mangrove propagules (seeds) germinate on the tree and drop as ready-to-root mini-plants that float until they find a spot—then send out roots to colonize new ground. Walking trees!
• Superheroes of climate & storms: They store massive “blue carbon” in their soils, filter pollutants, prevent erosion, and buffer hurricane surges. One acre can store as much carbon as the yearly energy use of many homes!
• Wildlife wonderland: Home to everything from juvenile marine life and sponges to birds like herons, egrets, and even Key deer munching on them. Kayak through serene mangrove tunnels for a peaceful adventure that feels like another world.
