Over the last several days, visitSI had the privilege of joining our friends from Kanie Town, Japan, during the Marion, IL & Kanie, Japan Sister City Cultural Exchange. ๐ฏ๐ต๐๐บ๐ธ
We covered a lot of Southern Illinois ground together, touring businesses and industries, exploring our communities, experiencing local arts and attractions, sharing meals, learning about our cultures, and taking a LOT of pictures along the way. ๐๐ธ
We watched longtime friendships pick up right where they left off; saw local partners welcome our guests with genuine curiosity, kindness, and respect; and watched the nerves of first introductions slowly give way to laughter and a comfort that made the goodbyes especially hard.
Crossing an ocean, stepping into unfamiliar homes and routines, trying new things, and communicating largely in a second language all while representing their community requires a tremendous amount of trust. Itโs something weโre especially mindful of and grateful for with each exchange visit.
Hospitality isnโt knowing everything about someoneโs culture before they arrive; itโs having the desire and patience to learn. Spending time together has a wonderful way of turning uncertainty into curiosity, and thatโs what makes cultural exchange so meaningful.
Yes, we showcase the places weโre proud of, but itโs the time spent together sharing meals, asking questions, laughing, and learning that makes a place halfway around the world feel a little more like home.
Weโre incredibly grateful to The City of Marion Illinois; the Marion, IL Chamber of Commerce; the Sister City Committee; the host families; and the many businesses, organizations, and community partners who welcomed our guests with genuine interest, generosity, and respect throughout their stay. ๐๐
And to our friends from Kanie Town: thank you for sharing your culture, your friendship, and these memories with us. We hope you take a little piece of Southern Illinois home with you and know youโll always have friends waiting for you here. ๐บ
Until we meet again. ใพใใไผใใงใใใพใง
