Sometimes a trip isn't wrong for you.

It's just wrong for you right now.

There are trips that are easier when your kids are little. Trips worth taking while everyone can still comfortably walk ten miles a day. Trips that work when you're perfectly happy piling everyone into one hotel room...or when you can come home jet-lagged on Sunday and somehow function at work on Monday.

And there are trips worth waiting for until you have the time, money, or interest to experience them the way you really want to.

We spend a lot of time deciding where we want to go.

I think when deserves a little more attention.

What's the best cruise line?

The best place to stay in Paris?

The best European city for a first trip?

The best time to visit Japan?

I get why we ask these questions. Travel is expensive, vacation time is precious, and nobody wants to get it wrong.

But most of the time, “best” isn't actually the question we need answered.

The best cruise for one traveler might be completely wrong for another. The perfect hotel for one trip might make no sense for the next.

So instead of asking, “What's the best?”

Try asking:

What's right for me, for this trip, right now?

That's a much more useful place to start.

There's a new name around here.

After several years as Enchantment for Everyone Travel, my travel business is becoming Curio.

The name comes from the idea of a curio cabinet: a collection gathered over a lifetime, filled with things whose value often isn't really in the object itself, but in the story attached to it.

That's what I want travel to give us.

Not just destinations we've checked off a list, but experiences that fit who we are and where we are in our lives. Trips we're prepared well enough to actually experience while we're there. Memories we get to keep enjoying long after we've come home.

The business has evolved, and I've gotten much clearer about the kind of travel I want to help people create. It was time for a name that fit.

So, welcome to Curio.

Travel deeply.

I wrote more about why I chose the name—and what a cream tea behind an English castle, a Mexican Riviera cruise and a Magic Kingdom parade have to do with it—in “What We Bring Home.” You can read it here: https://buff.ly/xMHqBOE

I'm increasingly skeptical of the travel bucket list.

Not because I don't have a ridiculously long list of places I'd like to go. I obviously do.

But "someday" isn't particularly useful.

Some trips can wait. Others make sense *now*.

Disney with a kid who's still completely enchanted by it is a different trip from Disney with your adult kid. Hiking somewhere spectacular belongs in a season when your body can do it. A trip with your parents has a window that isn't necessarily under your control. And sometimes you become fascinated by a place or a subject and that's reason enough to go while you're fascinated by it.

So instead of asking, "Where should I go someday?" I think there's a better question:

“What's the right trip for me at this moment in my life?”

Right traveler. Right place. Right moment.

That's a much more interesting way to build a lifetime of travel.

One of my favorite things about travel is how an experience can keep paying you back long after the trip is over.

There are places I've visited that were wonderful at the time but have mostly faded into the general category of "great trip."

And then there are moments I can still practically step back into.

A sunny May afternoon behind Highclere Castle. Tea, a scone, clotted cream and strawberry preserves. Ian was 16. We'd gotten off an overnight flight that morning and driven there without tickets, hoping we'd somehow get in.

We did.

Years later, Ian rediscovered Downton Abbey as an adult, and now every time Highclere appears on screen, there's that little extra pleasure of knowing: we've been there.

Bill Perkins calls these "memory dividends" in Die With Zero: experiences we enjoy when they happen and then continue to enjoy through the memories they create.

I've been thinking about that idea a lot lately—what makes some travel experiences worth remembering over and over again.

Okay, overpackers...this one's for you.

**What's the "just in case" item you have the hardest time leaving at home?**

👟 The extra shoes
🧥 The extra layer
👗 The fancy outfit
🧴 Every toiletry you own
👖 Enough clothes to avoid doing laundry under any circumstances
💊 A traveling pharmacy

Or something else entirely?

No judgment. 😂 Tell me yours in the comments.

A useful reminder when you're trying to close your suitcase:

People live where you're going.

There are pharmacies in Paris. Clothing stores in Tokyo. Umbrellas for sale in London. And if you discover that you desperately need something you didn't bring...you can probably buy it.

I once ended up shopping for underwear with my mom in Paris because an unexpected flight change gave us an extra night and we hadn't packed for it.

We got the underwear.

We also got one of my favorite afternoons from that trip.

You don't have to carry the solution to every possible problem with you.

You can invent a reason to pack almost anything if you start the sentence with "But what if...?"

What if it gets cold?
What if we go somewhere fancy?
What if these shoes get wet?
What if I need one more outfit?

Instead, look at where you're going, what you're doing, and what's actually likely to happen.

You don't need to be prepared for every conceivable version of your vacation. You need to be prepared for the one you're probably going to have.

Your plans for an entire day of vacation just got rained out.

What do you do?

☔ Find a museum or other indoor attraction
📚 Look for a bookstore or interesting local shop
🍷 Turn it into a very long lunch
🛋️ Call it a rest day
🔎 Immediately start researching Plan B

Or are you the person who packed a raincoat and is going out anyway? 😂

Tell me in the comments.

One of my coziest travel memories happened because it would. not. stop. raining.

We were staying near St. Petersburg, Florida, for a beach vacation, and the beach was clearly not going to happen that day. So we started looking for something else to do and stumbled across Haslam's, an enormous old used bookstore.

We spent the afternoon wandering through the stacks, buying books, and petting the bookstore cats. It wasn't what we'd planned. It wasn't even something we'd known existed.

But all these years later, I still remember that rainy afternoon.

Sometimes the best response to "Well, that's not happening" is..."I wonder what else is around here?"
