You could walk through Paris's Gare de Lyon a hundred times and never realise there's a restaurant like this upstairs. Gold ceilings, enormous chandeliers, beautiful paintings and waiters serving traditional French dishes beneath it all. And it's been welcoming diners since 1901.

It's called Le Train Bleu, and it was originally built for the 1900 Universal Exposition. The dining room was designed to impress wealthy travellers heading south from Paris, with 41 paintings celebrating the landscapes and destinations along the railway routes. Even the French president attended its inauguration.

The food is classic French cooking, with dishes carved or flambéed at your table. And here's something worth knowing. You don't need a train ticket to eat here, and you don't even have to book a full meal. There's a lounge bar where you can stop for a coffee or something lighter and still enjoy the surroundings.

My advice would be to book ahead if you want lunch or dinner, and arrive early enough to admire the room. It's one of those places where the building is every bit as interesting as what's on your plate.

🇫🇷 Paris, France & Europe: A Travel Update

If you’re currently in Europe, we would appreciate any comments updating the rest of the world.

It’s heartbreaking to see some of the images coming out of France and other parts of Europe this weekend. Streets filled with unrest, fires, damaged buildings, and even historic landmarks caught in the destruction.

For those of us who love Europe, its beautiful architecture, centuries of history, priceless art, and incredible culture, it’s especially difficult to watch. These are places that have survived generations, and once a piece of that history is lost, it isn’t always something that can be replaced.

While many of the demonstrations have been peaceful, many have escalated into violence and significant damage. Paris has been particularly affected, with disruptions to businesses, streets, and even access to the Louvre.

But here’s what we want travelers to remember: Europe is so much more than the headlines. ❤️

Paris is still Paris. France remains extraordinary. And the beauty, charm, and history that draw millions of us across the Atlantic haven’t disappeared.

It’s sunny on The Big Island, Hawaii! Small Kona storm is coming but nothing like we dealt with last week in Maui! Everything is getting put back together, can’t wait to see the next island, headed to Oahu to the Disney resort tomorrow!

Maui update!
The worst is over, but there are parts of the island that are struggling with flooding and infrastructure issues. If you’re coming in the next week, I’d probably hold off. But the local say, they are resilient, and they put things back together very quickly. So if you’re looking in the next few weeks, I’d still say come. They rely so heavily on tourism here, even if sometimes they get overwhelmed by it. The sun is out right now, and everyone is enjoying it!
