Twenty-eight guests, eight days, and the whole northern coast of Spain outside the window.

The El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo runs seven nights across Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country - four regions, each with its own character, linked by a coastline of beaches, cliffs and green hills. Capping the train at 28 guests is what makes the service feel personal rather than processed. Dining follows the same logic: lavish buffet breakfasts, a la carte dinners built around the best of Spanish cooking, and a different region on the plate as the route moves east.

Our guide walks through what sets this train apart, who it suits, and what the journey actually involves.

Once you are aboard El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo, almost nothing costs extra.

The gourmet meals, cooked from ingredients bought along the route, and the guided excursions off the train are part of the fare rather than a line of add-ons. You sleep in a proper suite with its own private bathroom, so the bag stays unpacked for the whole journey while the north of Spain changes outside: Santiago de Compostela, San Sebastian, and the small green towns of the Cantabrian coast in between.

Our guide sets out what the Gran Lujo includes and who the journey actually suits.

El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo is a five-star hotel on wheels that follows the northern coast of Spain.

The route traverses the Cantabrian coast, with the sea on one side and the green landscapes of Northern Spain on the other. You wake each morning in a new town without ever packing a bag, and the tour is all-inclusive: gourmet dining, cultural visits ashore, and a suite like this one waiting at the end of the day.

Our guide covers what the journey includes, where it stops, and the questions travellers ask most before they book.

Twenty-eight guests. That is the entire passenger list aboard El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo.

The train runs a 7-night, 8-day route across the top of Spain - Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country and Castilla y Leon - with San Sebastian and Santiago de Compostela among the towns and cities you explore along the way. The deluxe suites are the heart of it, and beyond them the train has lounge carriages built for the hours between excursions. Families travelling with children under 14 can request an extra bed.

Our guide walks through the suites in detail and what to expect on board.

On El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo the excursions are the point, not an add-on.

The train itself is a restored vintage set - suites, lounges and dining cars finished in the manner of the Belle Epoque, with meals cooked from local ingredients as it moves through northern Spain. But it stops every day and you get off: historic cathedrals, small fishing villages, and the food each region is known for. It is all-inclusive, so the day ashore is already part of the fare.

Our guide walks through what a day away from the carriage actually looks like.

Seven cars, four deluxe suites, and a spa car — El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo is a hotel that happens to have a locomotive.

The eight-day run covers roughly 1,000 kilometres and four regions: the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia. It starts in San Sebastian, where La Co**ha and a pintxos crawl through the old town fill the first afternoon, then stays overnight in Bilbao so there is time for the Guggenheim after dark. Later come Santillana del Mar and the Altamira cave-painting replica, Oviedo and its pre-Romanesque churches, and finally Santiago de Compostela.

Our guide walks through the full route and how to book it.

El Transcantabrico has been working Spain's northern coast since 1983, and it carries just 28 passengers.

The narrow-gauge route covers 400 miles between Santiago de Compostela and San Sebastian across eight days, in 14 suites with panoramic windows. Stops include Leon and its Gothic cathedral, Oviedo at the gateway to the Picos de Europa, and Santander with its Belle Epoque frontage. Along the way: the Cave of Altamira, Asturian cider poured in traditional sidrerias, and dinners cooked on board. It runs spring through autumn.

Our guide covers the routes and what slow travel actually looks like on this line.

What actually happens on board a European luxury train, from the cabin choice to the dress code.

Cabins run from compact single compartments to full suites, so the first real decision is how much space you want and whether a bathtub or a separate seating area matters more to you. Dinner is multi-course, built on regional specialties and paired with wine, and many trains add themed dinners, cooking demonstrations and tastings. Evenings bring live music and storytelling. Smart casual during the day, formal at dinner on most trains. Off-train excursions are part of the itinerary, not an add-on.

Our guide covers choosing a route, picking a cabin and what the days look like.
