It is Friday, and on the Cajun Coast that means it is time to eat.

Crawfish season is still going strong, and there is nothing quite like a hot batch poured out on the table with corn, potatoes, and sausage. Boiled, in a bisque, etouffee, fried tails, or stuffed into a pie, we do not play around with our crawfish down here. It is a point of pride and a way of life.

This batch came hot out of the pot at Coonass Seafood in Bayou Vista. Fresh, red, and ready to peel.

Pull up a chair, peel a few, and pass them down. The season does not last forever, so get them while they are good.

Where are you eating this weekend? Tell us in the comments and help a neighbor out.

Some places hold a whole lifetime of summers.

For generations, Lake Palourde has been where Cajun Coast families learned to fish, to ski, to bait a hook and wait. Granddads brought grandkids. Boats got passed down like heirlooms. Somebody always knew the spot where they were biting, and somebody always swore they had caught a bigger one the week before.

That is the thing about the water down here. It is not just recreation. It is memory. The same lake that taught your daddy to drive a boat is still out there waiting to teach the next one. Lake End Park still hums on summer weekends, the music still carries across the water, and the fish, well, the fish are still telling stories of their own.

Throwback to every kid who ever fell asleep in the back of the boat on the ride home. That is a Cajun Coast summer.

Here is a traveler tip worth pulling over for. If you want to understand the Cajun Coast, get a look at the Atchafalaya.

It is the largest river swamp in the country, a sprawling maze of water and cypress that has shaped life down here for as long as anybody can remember. From up high it looks like the land and the water gave up trying to tell each other apart. Channels braid through the trees, the light scatters across the surface, and somewhere down there a fisherman knows exactly where he is going even when it all looks the same to the rest of us.

You can take it in a lot of ways. A guided swamp tour, a kayak paddle, a slow drive across the basin bridge, or a quiet morning on the bank with a line in the water. However you do it, do it slow. The Atchafalaya does not rush, and it does not reward anybody who tries to.

This is the heart of the Cajun Coast. Come see it for yourself.

There is a place at the end of Highway 319 where the road runs out and the water takes over.

Cypremort Point State Park sits on a thin finger of land reaching into Vermilion Bay, and it is one of the only spots in Louisiana where you can drive all the way to the edge of the Gulf. Folks who know it will tell you about the half-mile beach, the long fishing pier, the sailboats leaning into the wind, and the sunsets that make the whole sky go soft. Somebody once said it is the place where the world looks round. Stand out there long enough and you will understand what they meant.

Today is World Oceans Day, and there is no better place on the Cajun Coast to feel small in the best way. The redfish and flounder are out there. So are the pelicans, the marsh grass, and a quiet the rest of the world forgot how to make.

The water gives us so much down here. Today is a good day to give a little back. Pack out what you pack in, respect the marsh, and leave it beautiful for the next person who needs it.

Today is the day. National Fishing and Boating Week kicks off, and on the Cajun Coast, that is basically a holiday.

For the next nine days, the country celebrates getting out on the water, and we do not need much of an excuse. Grab a rod, launch the boat, drag the kayak off the rack, or just find a quiet spot on the bank and watch the line. The Atchafalaya, the bayous, the lakes, the bay. They are all out there waiting.

And if you are staying close to home today:
Cosmic Bowling, 8 PM to midnight at Steelwood Lanes in Morgan City.

However you spend it, spend a little of it near the water. That is what June is for.

It is National Donut Day, and we are not about to let that one slide by.

There is something about a warm donut and a hot cup of coffee on a Friday morning that makes the whole day feel a little easier. So here is your assignment. Skip the chain on the way to work and pull into a local spot instead. The kind of place where they know your order before you say it and the glaze is still a little soft.

Tell us in the comments, where do you go for the best donut on the Cajun Coast? We are taking notes, and we are getting hungry.

Happy Donut Day, y'all.
