Upper Nantahala 8/7/26 release report:

We had a great day on the river! Not too crowded, but plenty busy shuttling happy paddlers! Lots of new faces as well as the regulars. Glad to see the teens from Chattanooga made it back…they must like it up here! Had a chance to put names to some regulars I always see( Avis, James and Josh?). We set a record for hauling, 18 in one trip. Can you say crowded? Rafts were stacked five high plus kayaks. Cheryl passed out 48 sandwiches, 4 gallons of Gatorade and 4 gallons of water. I think the Starlink got used quite a bit too.

We really appreciate all the words of thanks and encouragement from everyone! You make us feel special with all the love you give. And thanks for all the financial help too. Special shoutout to Mr K (you know who you are) for providing funds to purchase more bracelets for next year. Food and fuel expenses were covered by Asheville Joe for this release, thank you sir!

Unfortunately Cheryl and I have a special event to attend during the Fall 2-day release, so TheNanty won’t be shuttling or providing the Hosting Tent. Hopefully NOC and Endless Rivers can cover the Cascades shuttle.

Shuttle announcement for Friday, Aug 7 Upper Nantahala water release. Rain or Shine we will run service from PBJ to Teacups along the Cascades. Release is from 4-7pm. Hosting Tent subject to weather conditions. Looking forward to seeing all your happy faces!

Report for July 24 water release:

Another successful hosting and shuttle event on the Upper Nanty, Cascades section! Paddlers got the benefit of abundant rainfall the previous 24hrs, adding up to an additional 100cfs, totaling somewhere between 300-370 cfs. Met some awesome new people and of course always happy to see the regulars. Shout out to the Chattanooga teens getting their first PFD’s! We were blessed to have friends Nick & Tja of Blue Ridge Basecamp helping out with shuttling efforts by bringing an extra truck and trailer. It allowed me to have a chill event! Our daughter and youngest grandson were helping out at the Hosting Tent with Cheryl, they really enjoyed meeting paddlers and handing out sandwiches and refreshments. A paddler had a foot injury and took refuge at our site. Fortunately Mike & Linda McCreary were there with a first aid kit to help patch up the damages. Daughter got some good video at the Horns!

I am so appreciative of our donors that provide assistance helping us reach out to the paddling community! God bless Asheville Joe 🙏 for providing food and fuel for this event! Mike & Linda provided the blue Gatorade, always a big hit for thirsty paddlers.

Upper Nanty water release this Friday July 24 from 4-7pm. TheNanty.com will be providing Cascades shuttle service from PBJ takeout to White Oak Creek put-in. Cheryl and family will be at the Hospitality Tent with sandwiches, Gatorade and water. Free Wi-Fi for all who need to keep in touch.

Report for July 1 water release:

Wow! I have never seen so many paddlers on the Cascades! Everyone came out in record numbers. I guess it was partially due to Week of Rivers. My wife calculated I shuttled nearly 200! All I know was I didn’t stop all afternoon. Pick up, drop off, repeat. Fortunately the USFS was there to provide organization, allowing us to traverse Old River Rd up to the Teacups. Caution to anyone parking on that road…shoulder on the river is narrow and steep! One guy almost slid into the river and had to call a tow truck ($$$). All in all it was a GREAT day! Saw all the regulars and met many more ( hey Ben! ) You all make this old man very happy, I enjoy providing you safe travels and Cheryl cherishes the conversations and providing snacks.

Let’s do it again on the next release July 24!

I was so busy there was no chance for pics. Just got Eric spilling the Teacups and a friend caught me inspecting a load. Anyone got some paddler pics they can share?

Heads up Nanty paddlers! We will be shuttling Cascades this Wednesday July 1, 4-7pm. Pickup is PBJ rapids, dropping off at Old River Rd. Hosting tent will be available, weather permitting.

Last Friday was another successful day shuttling and feeding paddlers on the Upper Nanty. Unfortunately on the limited hour release days, we are the only ones providing service. I figure we got 80-100 pedestrians off the road. Thank you to Macon County Sheriff’s Office for providing traffic enforcement, it’s always needed!
Sure was good seeing all the familiar faces and met some new ones too!

Next release is July 1, from 4-7pm.
Weather permitting, Cheryl and the Hosting Tent will be there also.

We will be providing Cascades shuttle service this Friday June 19 for the water release. As usual we pick up at the PBJ rapids and drop off at Old River Rd. Weather permitting, the hosting tent will be set up offering sandwiches and refreshments. Release is between 4-6pm.
