Maria Mitchell Association to HOST:
Celestial Stakeout: Perseids Meteor Shower Event
Loines Observatory, 59 Milk Street, Ext.
Wednesday August, 12 | 11pm - 12:30am
August is an exciting time to look up! The annual Perseids Meteor Shower has begun and will peak the evening of August 12 –13. Meteor showers occur when the Earth travels through dust left behind by a comet. The comet associated with the Perseids is 109P/Swift-Tuttle. The Moon will be new, which is ideal for observing meteors. Fingers crossed for clear skies!
The Perseids are among the year's most spectacular celestial events, producing bright, fast-moving meteors at rates of up to 50–100 per hour under ideal dark-sky conditions.
Throughout the evening, MMA professional astronomers will guide visitors through the meteor shower, explain the science behind this annual event, and point out constellations, planets, and other highlights of the summer night sky. Guests are encouraged to relax, look up, and enjoy one of nature's most impressive astronomical displays.
Pre-registration is required. Click Link Below
