I've seen several posts this week about Tennessee and the drop-off in foreign tourism. Of course, those posts have comment threads that are full of bots and disgusting cultural racism.

As a contrast, I thought I'd give you a real life glimpse at how this change has affected a small business, namely mine.

I've owned and operated this music history walking tour in downtown Nashville for the past fourteen years. At least 50% of my clientele (that I've built by tireless work and word of mouth reviews) over the years has come from Canada and the UK. I attribute a lot of that to the deep interest in country music history that you tend to find in both places.

But thanks to tariffs, endless denigration of our allies and neighbors, and random ICE arrests and refusals of entry, that 50% has shrunk to 5%. It has seriously hurt my business. I've also watched long-term relationships with several Canadian companies who booked private corporate tours with me over the years all but disappear. They all tell me that they love me but not our current leadership.

This is how it is.

It's frustrating, to say the least. And I've yet to hear a single convincing, fact-based argument that any of this administration's policies - namely, the tariffs and the immigration crackdown - are helping to improve the lives of ordinary Americans like myself.

I've met very few people in my life who I felt possessed an inner light. Dolly was one of them. I was lucky to interview her twice over the years. Both times in person. Sitting across from her that first time, I was nervous and a little tongue-tied. But she was approachable and warm, so bright and funny, and really had the gift of making whoever she was talking to feel like they were the most important person in the room.

I also had the benefit both times of talking with her mostly about songwriting, her favorite subject. She told me, “If somebody said to me, 'You can only do one thing in show business for the rest of your life. What will it be? I would say, 'I'll write songs.' To me, it's like putting something in the world today that wasn't there yesterday that will still be there tomorrow. That's my favorite thing I do.”

Think of all the good things she put in the world. And not just songs. A life well-lived.

About this photo, taken after our second interview. She said, “Twins! Well, this could be your Christmas card. . . I mean, it really does look like we got dressed from the same closet this morning.”

Standing that close to her, I also remember thinking, “She smells really good.”

This weekend marks the 14th anniversary of my little start-up business, and I've decided it will be the last year for regularly scheduled tours.

Next year, I'll be doing private and corporate groups only.

So if you've ever thought, "Hey, I'd like to take Bill's tour sometime," the next few months will be your last chance.
