Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish year. In the days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Jews ask forgiveness of one another. On Yom Kippur, they ask forgiveness from God. To mark this solemn day, many Ashkenazi Jewish men, and today some women, wear a white robe called a kittel, symbolizing purity and renewal. The belt worn over the kittel symbolizes the separation of the upper body, representing the spiritual, from the lower body, which represents the mundane.

This Yom Kippur belt buckle was made in 1862 in the city of Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine). The buckle's fine silverwork, ornamental frame, and laurel border reflect decorative styles that would have been familiar throughout nineteenth-century Central Europe. Two lions, a classic motif in Jewish ritual art, flank a verse from Leviticus 16:30: “For on this day atonement shall be made for you to purify you of all your sins; you shall be pure before God.”
