A Greek American woman walked into a small theater in Los Angeles, and that is why My Big Fat Greek Wedding exists.

Her name is Rita Wilson. Her mother was Greek, and she was raised Greek Orthodox in Hollywood.

In the late 1990s, she went to see a one-woman show by an unknown comic, Nia Vardalos, a Greek Canadian who had sent flyers to every Greek church in Southern California to fill the seats.

Rita knew those people. She went backstage and said it should be a movie. A week later, her husband came to see it. Her husband is Tom Hanks.

Hollywood wanted a bigger star. One company wanted to make the family Hispanic. Rita and Tom backed Nia instead.

Made for about $5 million, it took in over $241 million in America, the highest-grossing romantic comedy the country had seen.

Rita turned 70 this week. She and Tom are Greek citizens now.

Who in your family is exactly like Gus, with his bottle of Windex?
