Magical moments this week with a boat friendly Humpback! Capt Delaney reported this whale was very curious about our Zodiac and wanted to make a full inspection. While not an everyday occurrence, close encounters do happen sometimes on the whales terms! (Please be sure to give them plenty of space otherwise, if you are on your own vessel.) The whale chooses you if you’re a gentle and cautious operator 😊

No shortage of great encounters this week so far! This morning, a giant Fin Whale in glassy calm water, and yesterday afternoon a pod of migrating gray whales steaming up the coast. The weather has been sooo nice for March, and the whale watching this year is trending significantly better than the same time in 2025!

The coastal migration is in full swing now! Starting in February we switch from seeing mostly southbound whales to those traveling north. When Gray Whales leave their wintering grounds in Baja California, they tend to swim closer to shore as they travel back to Alaska. That means our sightings numbers go up, and March is always the peak month for the migration.

The weather has been beautiful with no end in sight to sunshine in the forecast! Many whales were seen today, and many more are coming our way 😊

Thanks and for these videos of our recent encounters!

More amazing “winter days” this week with smooth ocean surface and 70s temps! The only thing reminding us that it’s actually February are the Pacific Whitesided Dolphins which have been around recently. This is a cold water species that is mostly seen November through April in Southern California. Their beautiful black and white coloration and unique faces are always a great photo opportunity! On Monday we saw these, common dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins for a Delphinidae trifecta 😎

Fintastic captures from our crew in the last few days! Humpback season has a few more weeks left in it, and some trips are experiencing “Grand Finale” style action in beautiful winter lighting. Thanks for crewmember and Capt .tv for submitting these winners 🏆

IN OTHER NEWS, Capt Erica spotted a Gray Whale today heading south for the winter! This species will become our staple sighting for the next several months 😊

Another spectacular Fall day on the ocean off Newport Beach! Thanksgiving day served up a bounty of whales on a silver platter for us in calm and sunny conditions. Capt and crewmember took these videos on our two trips today where more than a half dozen Humpbacks were sighted along with hundreds of Common Dolphins.

Plenty of room Friday through Sunday aboard the Zodiac if you’re up for the Adventure!

Saturday turned out fantastic for whales and ✨sunset colors 🌅! Our 8 Hour Expedition counted 18 Humpbacks, 3 Fin Whales, and 500 dolphins! The 2 hour Adventure finished the day with 6 Humpbacks, 2 Fin Whales and 100s of Common Dolphins. Remember… Fall is now our PEAK whale watching season. There are daily departures of 2 hour trips and next Sunday has a 4 hour trip scheduled! Saturday Dec 6 will be the next 8 hour Expedition.

Thanks to passenger and Capt for today’s videos!

An exciting Saturday off Newport Beach filled with Humpback Whales! Capt Erica took these videos on board our 5 Hour Private Charter today, but it wasn’t too far from the harbor that this action occurred! Thanks 🙌

Fresh off the water this afternoon with a fantastic Humpback encounter! The past two days have delivered with consistent sightings of our most prevalent Fall whale species. Today’s whale was in quite the mood, slapping the water with tail and flippers… likely a tactic to get attention from other whales. As the Humpbacks transition from feeding season to breeding season their behaviors can start to get more charismatic!

The storm this week really helped us out! Seems like it pushed a lot of Humpbacks down the coast for us today. There were as many as 5 Humpbacks and 2 Fin Whales off Newport, along with about 1,000 Common Dolphins and 50 Bottlenose.

From now through early December we will be experiencing PEAK SEASON for Humpbacks, and it’s honestly the best time of the year for whale watching these days off Orange County. To kick off the Fall season we have a 4 hour trip departing at 1045am this Sunday!
