One of Norfolk's treasured gems!
July 16, 1932: Secretary of War Patrick J. Hurley approves of establishing the Silver Star Medal as a replacement for the Silver Citation Star. Recipients of the Silver Citation Star for gallantry in action against enemy forces would have a 3/16” silver star placed upon the ribbon of a campaign medal. General Douglas MacArthur was Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army at this time and played a significant role in establishing this award as it’s very own medal. During his service in World War I MacArthur was awarded 7 Silver Stars.
