One of the smartest things a family can do when planning a large trip is start earlier than they think they need to.

When you are coordinating 8, 12, 15, or even 20 people, you are not just booking rooms.

You may be trying to find rooms near each other, different room types, connecting rooms, flights from different cities, dietary accommodations, mobility-friendly options, activities for different ages, and dates that somehow work for everyone.

The bigger the group, the fewer good options remain when you wait.

If your family is talking about a big trip next year, now may be the time to start the conversation.

Cruise, all-inclusive resort, or Europe?

That is one of the biggest questions families ask when they start planning a multigenerational vacation.

And there really isn’t one right answer.

A cruise can be fantastic when everyone wants different activities but still wants to meet back up easily.

An all-inclusive resort can make meals, entertainment, and daily planning incredibly simple.

Europe can be amazing for families who want history, food, culture, and a trip that feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The best choice depends on your family. How active is everyone? How much moving around do you want to do? How important is having everything included? And how much independence does everyone want?

Those questions usually tell us much more than asking, “Where should we go?”

You do not have to do everything together on a family vacation.

In fact, we usually recommend that you don’t.

Some of the best multigenerational trips have a few big shared moments and plenty of time for everyone to do their own thing.

Maybe the grandparents enjoy a quiet morning. The parents take the kids snorkeling. The teenagers head to the activity area. Then everyone meets for dinner and talks about what they did.

That balance can make a family trip feel a lot less stressful.

The goal is not to keep everyone together every minute. The goal is to create memories everyone actually enjoys.

Planning a family vacation for multiple generations sounds easy until everyone starts answering the question: “What do you want to do?”

Grandparents may want a slower pace. Parents may want convenience. Teenagers want freedom. Younger kids need breaks, snacks, and probably a pool.

That’s why multigenerational travel is less about finding one perfect destination and more about finding a trip that gives everyone room to enjoy it differently.

A cruise may work beautifully for one family. An all-inclusive resort may be perfect for another. And sometimes Europe works better than either one.

The key is matching the trip to the people going, not choosing the destination first.

What would be the hardest part of planning a trip for your whole family?
