Imagine standing among the flowing sandstone of The Wave, only to find its incredible formations reflected in crystal-clear pools of rainwater. Every ripple, every sweep of color, every impossible curve doubled in the most spectacular natural mirror. And you think it can’t possibly get any better.

But then the light shifts. The sandstone glows in shades of burnt orange, crimson, and gold. Delicate ribbons of water catch the sky, turning the sculpted rock into a kaleidoscope of color and reflection. The boundaries between stone and sky seem to disappear, and suddenly you’re surrounded by a world of impossible symmetry, color, and landscapes that look more like a painting than anything nature could have created.

And just when you think you’ve seen it all, the adventure continues. Beyond The Wave, toward Top Rock Arch, the Alcove, and Melody Arch. More extraordinary formations, hidden corners, and discoveries that make an already remarkable day feel almost limitless.

This is The Wave. Not just something to photograph, but something to experience, explore, and carry with you long after the dust has settled.

Alstrom Point was the plan. But when the storms roll in, you learn to pivot, not push.

So we traded one spectacular perspective of Lake Powell for another, discovering the hidden magic of Skylight Arch.

Because the weather may change the plan, but it doesn’t have to steal the adventure.

The desert wears rain differently.

The colors deepen. The sandstone burns brighter. The air turns cool and clean, and every curve of The Wave seems to have been freshly painted.

After the rain, the desert doesn’t just look different.

It looks alive.

Everybody wants to see The Wave.

It has become the celebrity of the Vermilion Cliffs. Its photograph has traveled farther than most people ever will.

And every day, people follow the same trail, chasing a place they have already seen a thousand times on a screen.

There is nothing wrong with The Wave. It is extraordinary. Truly.

But somewhere along the way, we began confusing fame with greatness.

As if the number of people who know a place should determine how much it is worth knowing.

South Coyote Buttes never got the memo.

It sits in the same wild country, shaped by the same ancient forces, painted in the same impossible colors.

Great rivers of sandstone roll across the earth. Ridges rise like frozen waves. The ground twists and folds into a thousand different shapes, each one stranger and more beautiful than the last.

And yet, it remains largely unknown.

Funny, isn’t it? A place can spend millions of years becoming a masterpiece, only to be overlooked because another masterpiece found its way onto a screen first.

Maybe that says more about us than it does about the land.

We have become very good at following directions. Following the pack. We know where to stand, what to photograph, and which places we are supposed to love. We have learned to chase the things everyone else wants, then call it adventure.

But there is a difference between seeing something beautiful and discovering it.

The latter asks something of you. A willingness to turn away from the obvious. To venture beyond the familiar. To accept that the best things in life may not come with a famous name or a thousand five-star reviews.

South Coyote Buttes is a reminder that the world does not owe its wonders to a marketing campaign.

The crowd may tell you where to go. It cannot tell you what you will find.

And sometimes, the greatest treasure is the one everybody else walked past.

Today, the sheep had the best seat in the house.

High above us in the Sand Coves of Coyote Buttes North, a herd of bighorn sheep stood silhouetted against a sky awash in the softest shades of sunrise.

We had ventured beyond The Wave, and the desert rewarded us with a scene that stopped everyone in their tracks.

No words. No movement. Just a quiet moment shared between us and the wild, beneath a sky that seemed to have been painted just for this morning.

The Wave was waiting for us to return, but for a little while, nobody was in a hurry.

What’s your favorite place?

I’ve been asked that question more times than I can count.

And living here, I’ve never known quite how to answer.

How do you choose between a thousand shades of red, a hidden canyon, a silent arch, a river winding through stone?

How do you choose when every turn in the road seems to reveal another place that makes you stop and stare?

So maybe I’ve finally figured it out.

Your favorite place is simply the one you’re standing in.

Right now.
In this light.

Last night, mine was Skylight Arch.

Tomorrow, who knows?

And maybe that’s the thing about favorite places.

They change.

They change like the colors of a sunset — day to day, moment to moment, light to light.

Because the magic was never just the place.

It was being there.

At that time
On that day.
In that moment - feeling like there was nowhere else in the world you’d rather be.
