Villa Politi dates to 1862, when Maria Teresa Laudien, a Prussian/Austrian noblewoman, came to Syracuse. She fell in love with Salvatore Politi, a prominent Syracusan artist and guide.

According to the hotel and FAI, the couple turned their vision into a grand hotel built above the ancient Latomie dei Cappuccini — enormous Greek-era limestone quarries.

The setting is extraordinary. We are staying on top of an archaeological landscape that goes back more than 2,500 years. The ancient quarry spaces eventually became a lush, almost theatrical garden beneath the hotel.

Villa Politi became one of the places where the European elite came to experience Sicily. It developed a reputation as an international salon, attracting aristocrats, writers, artists and political figures.

The hotel is considered one of Italy's earliest purpose-built grand hotels, dating from the same era in which luxury tourism was beginning to develop in Sicily.
