In 1797, while George Washington was still actively trying to capture her and return her to slavery, Ona Judge married Jack Staines in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Even more remarkable? The wedding announcement appeared in the local newspaper using her real name—not an alias. Despite being one of the most wanted freedom seekers in America, Ona chose to live openly and claim her identity.

The ceremony was performed by Rev. Samuel Haven at the South Meeting House, a site we visited on our Ona Judge Tour in Portsmouth. Standing there today, it’s hard not to reflect on the courage it took for Ona to build a life, marry, and publicly embrace her freedom while still being hunted.

Standing at the Portsmouth, New Hampshire, waterfront where Ona Judge arrived after escaping slavery from George Washington’s household. She was received here by a free Black man named Pomp Springs.

Just after landing, Ona would have passed the Sheafe warehouse — a site once used for the buying and selling of enslaved people. I can only imagine what she felt stepping onto this shore in an unfamiliar place, knowing capture was still possible.

When Ona left Philadelphia, she had no idea where she was going. She only knew she needed to be free.

What an honor and privilege to travel to Portsmouth, New Hampshire for the unveiling of the mural honoring Ona Judge in the very town where she found refuge and freedom after escaping enslavement at the President’s House in Philadelphia.

I planned this trip within six hours of booking and arrival, and I am so grateful I made the journey. I had the opportunity to take an incredible tour of Portsmouth and visit sites connected to Ona Judge’s life and legacy, helping me better understand her next chapter of freedom and resilience.

As someone who helps share her story in Philadelphia, it felt deeply meaningful to continue the journey she began at the President’s House and learn more about the community where she built a life on her own terms.

On May 21, we honor the inaugural Ona Maria Judge Staines Day in Philadelphia.

In 1796, Ona made her courageous and triumphant escape from the President’s House—claiming her freedom in the face of unimaginable odds. Today, her story feels especially urgent as the legacy and preservation of that site face renewed threats.

We remember. We honor. We protect the truth.

Join us in uplifting Ona’s legacy and defending the history she helped shape.
