This is such a devastating loss. So glad that The Black Journey had a chance to visit during Black History Month this year and experience the history of the brave individuals who participated in freedom rides. I encourage you to visit this important civil rights landmark before it is too late. 🚌🚍

The building housing the historic Freedom Riders Museum appears to be part of a DOGE-ordered sell-off of federal properties.

🧠 Of course there is a Philly connection here. Dr. Fuller “was married to the renowned [Philadelphia] sculptor Meta Vaux Warrick, and they had three children.” She was from a family of successful caterers and barbers.

Alzheimer’s disease is increasingly widespread, affecting more than 55 million people worldwide — a figure that’s expected to nearly triple by 2050.

Despite the disease’s prevalence, few know the history of research on Alzheimer’s and the role played by an important yet long-overlooked figure: Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller, the first Black psychiatrist and neurologist in the United States. https://cnn.it/4hUtVFK

Today, I had the honor of visiting the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at my alma mater, Temple University. Dr. Blockson, a historian, author, and activist, dedicated his life to preserving Black history, amassing over 700,000 artifacts that tell our powerful and resilient story. His work ensures that our voices, struggles, and triumphs are never forgotten.

A special thanks to Ms. Judith Robinson for organizing this fascinating field trip!

Grateful to walk through this incredible archive and reconnect with the legacy of a true scholar.

Exploring Black History at the Oregon Historical Society

Had an eye-opening visit with The Black Journey to the Oregon Historical Society! I was especially intrigued by the stories of Oregon’s Black homesteaders and pioneers—many of whom overcame immense barriers to claim their place in history. I learned about the harsh reality of Oregon’s early exclusion laws, which denied Black residents the right to settle and even mandated they be lashed 39 times every six months until they left the territory. Yet, despite these injustices, resilience prevailed. One incredible story that stood out was that of Letitia Carson, the only Black homesteader to receive a land grant in Oregon. Her legacy is a testament to strength and perseverance!

This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Building Utah’s Black History annual event! I learned so much about Salt Lake City and Utah’s Black history trailblazers—stories of resilience, achievement, and community that deserve to be told. It was also amazing to connect with community members, share insights, and highlight the work we’re doing in Philadelphia with The Black Journey—bringing Black history to life through walking tours. Grateful for the exchange of knowledge and inspiration!

Here lie abolitionist and women’s suffragist Lucretia Mott, alongside Robert Purvis and Harriet Forten Purvis, fierce champions of the anti-slavery movement. Their legacy of justice and activism continues to inspire!

🔥🏡 The story of Dinah, an enslaved woman at Stenton Mansion in Philadelphia, is one of quiet heroism. Home to James Logan, secretary to William Penn, Stenton was nearly set ablaze by the British during the Revolutionary War. But Dinah’s quick thinking and bravery saved it—she convinced the soldiers to spare the house, preserving a vital piece of history. Though her life was shaped by enslavement, her courage left a lasting impact. Today, her legacy is honored at Stenton.

🚶🏾‍♀️✨ The Black Journey hit the streets of Portland, Maine, diving deep into the city’s rich Black history! From the Abyssinian Meeting House—one of the oldest Black churches in the U.S.—to the stories of courageous abolitionists, we walked in the footsteps of those who fought for freedom. Maine was a key stop on the Underground Railroad, offering refuge to freedom seekers on their journey to Canada. The resilience and legacy of Portland’s Black community are truly inspiring! 💡✊🏾

Visiting the International African American Museum in Charleston, SC, was an unforgettable experience. From powerful exhibits to untold stories of resilience, this space honors the deep-rooted history and contributions of African Americans.
