Built during a period of severe overcrowding, Pennhurst's Quaker Building became associated with reports of neglect, isolation, and mistreatment.

Investigations in the 1960s and 1970s exposed the conditions residents endured.

Today, guests report unexplained footsteps, voices, and shadow figures throughout the building.

Pennhurst State School and Hospital opened in Pennsylvania in 1908 to care for people with cognitive and physical disabilities.

But by the mid-20th century, overcrowding and neglect had become widespread.

A 1968 documentary brought conditions inside the institution to national attention, eventually contributing to its closure in 1987.

Today, visitors report shadow figures, voices and footsteps throughout the abandoned buildings.

Long before it became one of Philadelphia's most beloved parks, Washington Square served as a burial ground during the Revolutionary War.

More than 2,000 soldiers, prisoners, and yellow fever victims are believed to rest beneath its grounds.

Mount Pleasant Mansion has stood in Philadelphia since the 1760s, carrying centuries of history within its Georgian walls.

Once owned by privateer John McPherson and later purchased by Benedict Arnold, the estate is now known for reports of ghostly footsteps, shadow figures, and unexplained activity.

Fort Mifflin's history is marked by war, sacrifice, and survival.

During the 1777 Siege of Fort Mifflin, soldiers held their ground despite relentless attacks, helping delay British forces.

Later serving as a military prison, the fort gained an even darker legacy.

The third and final part of our Eastern State Penitentiary mini-series explores the prison’s long history of reported hauntings.

Since closing in 1971, visitors have documented activity like disembodied voices, phantom footsteps, and shadow figures throughout the cellblocks.

Apparitions such as the “Soap Lady,” the" Shadow in the Cell," and disturbances linked to former inmate Al Capone remain among the site’s most frequently cited accounts.

Part 2 of our Eastern State Penitentiary mini-series takes a closer look at some of the most notorious names tied to the prison.

Al Capone served eight months here from 1929–1930 after a weapons arrest and was housed in an unusually furnished cell.

Bank robber Willie Sutton spent years incarcerated at Eastern State and participated in a major tunnel escape attempt.

Even Pep the Dog became an official inmate, serving as a prison mascot. 🐶
