The third and final part of our Eastern State Penitentiary mini-series explores the prison’s long history of reported hauntings.

Since closing in 1971, visitors have documented activity like disembodied voices, phantom footsteps, and shadow figures throughout the cellblocks.

Apparitions such as the “Soap Lady,” the" Shadow in the Cell," and disturbances linked to former inmate Al Capone remain among the site’s most frequently cited accounts.

Part 2 of our Eastern State Penitentiary mini-series takes a closer look at some of the most notorious names tied to the prison.

Al Capone served eight months here from 1929–1930 after a weapons arrest and was housed in an unusually furnished cell.

Bank robber Willie Sutton spent years incarcerated at Eastern State and participated in a major tunnel escape attempt.

Even Pep the Dog became an official inmate, serving as a prison mascot. 🐶

Eastern State Penitentiary operated in Philadelphia from 1829 to 1971 as a pioneering experiment in prison reform.

Its fortress-like design housed inmates such as Al Capone and Willie Sutton, while prolonged isolation left deep psychological scars on many prisoners.

Now preserved as a historic landmark, the silent cellblocks are often said to hold more than history alone…
