🌊 A SURPRISE BELOW STUMP PASS

On August 30, 2026, I flew my drone above Stump Pass, Ski Alley, Knight Island, and Stump Pass Beach State Park during a calm morning with a clear incoming tide.

When I reached the water, I turned the camera straight down to see what was below.

I was looking for fish—but instead discovered a manatee, a stingray, and even a Minn Kota underwater.

The manatee gave me the best part of the flight as I followed it through the clear shallow water toward Stump Pass.

🚤 Private Boat Tour vs. Boat Rental in Southwest Florida — Which Is Right for You?

Renting a boat gives you independence, but it also means taking responsibility for navigation, tides, shallow water, anchoring, docking, changing weather, boat traffic, and operating an unfamiliar boat.

A private captain-led boat tour is different. You can relax, spend time with your family and friends, watch for dolphins, explore islands and sandbars, and enjoy Southwest Florida while your captain handles the boat and navigation.

Both can be excellent choices. The right one depends on your boating experience and the kind of day you want on the water.

Read my complete comparison and decide which option fits you best:

🌊 The Sandy Tongue of Stump Pass | Captain Pavel’s Journey #010

Stump Pass never looks exactly the same twice.

On this morning trip from Placida, I traveled North through Lemon Bay and Ski Alley toward Stump Pass near Englewood, Florida. Calm conditions and a rising tide revealed a long shallow formation of sand reaching into the pass—what I call the Sandy Tongue of Stump Pass.

I launched the drone for a view from above, where the contrast between the sandy shallows, deeper channels and Gulf water was incredible. Below us, a large school of striped mullet moved through the clear water.

⚓ Another morning exploring the constantly changing waters of Southwest Florida.

🌊 Boca Grande Sandbar — Not Another Boat in Sight!

Before noon, Boca Grande Sandbar was underwater with 20–30 boats gathered around it. A few hours later, the tide had fallen, the sand was appearing, and there wasn’t another boat in sight.

In Captain Pavel’s Journey #009, follow our day from Gasparilla Marina through Dog Channel, past Boca Grande Sandbar toward Bird Key, and back again as the falling tide completely transformed the landscape.

From the helm, from the sandbar, and from 400 feet above with my drone, I watched one familiar place become something completely different.

And yes — my friend 🐬 made an appearance below the drone.

🎶⚓ Boca H2O Music Festival — How a Sandbar Tradition Was Born

How did a simple idea in 2020 grow into one of Southwest Florida’s most recognizable boating traditions?

In Captain Pavel’s Journey #008, I tell the story of Boca H2O — from Brian Turner’s original idea of bringing live music directly to boaters, to the first gathering near Little Dog Island, and eventually to the huge Memorial Day celebration at Boca Grande Sandbar.

I also look at the floating stage, boating culture, safety, environmental responsibility, and what it is really like to experience Boca H2O from the water.

🏖️ Stump Pass from Above | A Calm Summer Morning in Southwest Florida

See Stump Pass from a different perspective — from above.

On this calm summer morning, I took the drone up over Stump Pass and the southern end of Manasota Key to capture the coastline, shallow Gulf waters, sand formations and the constantly changing landscape where Lemon Bay meets the Gulf of Mexico.

Stump Pass is one of my favorite places to explore by boat because it never looks exactly the same. Tides, currents, wind and storms continually reshape the sand and shoreline.

🌿 Warm Mineral Springs, North Port, Florida | Captain Pavel’s Journey #007

Sometimes my journeys take me across the waters of Southwest Florida. This time, I traveled inland to explore one of the most unusual natural places in our region — Warm Mineral Springs in North Port.

At first glance, it looks like a peaceful circular lake. But beneath the surface is an ancient limestone sinkhole reaching approximately 205 feet deep, filled by naturally warm, mineral-rich groundwater rising from deep below Florida.

The water remains around 85°F year-round, but what fascinated me most was the history beneath it.

Warm Mineral Springs has preserved evidence of prehistoric people, Ice Age animals, ancient environments, and thousands of years of Florida history. It is not simply a place to swim and relax — it is a remarkable window into the geological and human past of Southwest Florida.

In Captain Pavel’s Journey #007, I explore the spring's geology, mineral-rich water, archaeology, wildlife, history, wellness traditions, and what visitors can experience there today.
