𝗢𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟳, 𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟳, 𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗚𝘂𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗺, 𝗘𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝟭 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗻. All three astronauts lost their lives.

This happened at 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝟯𝟰 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹, where the Apollo 1 spacecraft was being prepared for its first crewed mission.

Construction of LC-34 began in 𝟭𝟵𝟱𝟵, and the complex later became an important launch site for the Saturn program. Between 1961 and 1968, 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 launched from here.

The Apollo 1 tragedy led to major changes in the spacecraft and procedures as NASA worked to make future crewed missions safer.

Just over a year later, 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝟳 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗖-𝟯𝟰, becoming the first crewed Apollo mission.

Today, the remains of Launch Complex 34 stand as a reminder of both the achievements and sacrifices of the early space program.

𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲: Launch Complex 34 is not currently part of the regular Canaveral Tours itinerary. This was a special visit.

On 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟯, a SpaceX Falcon 9 launched from Cape Canaveral carrying three O3b mPOWER satellites.

And sometimes, our 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿, 𝘁𝗼𝗼. When that happens, we pause what we’re doing, stop and watch, and enjoy the moment.

For some, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime sight. Here on the Space Coast, 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆.

A side of Cape Canaveral that doesn’t get talked about enough.

Spectrum News recently featured the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse and the history surrounding this unique part of the Space Coast.

We’re especially glad to see Canaveral Tours guests included in the story.

On 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, Elizabeth joined the Space Coast Technical Symposium and got to experience a special visit to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The symposium brought together people with a shared interest in the history, technology, and future of space exploration, with tours, presentations, and opportunities to see some of the Space Coast’s historic sites up close.

And this time, Elizabeth wasn’t leading the tour. She was there as a guest, experiencing it alongside the group.

𝟭 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁.

Bert was out leading a tour at Launch Complex 9–10 with a group of space enthusiasts, including one guest who had actually worked on the station they were visiting.

Later in the tour, the group was near Hangar C and the lighthouse when a fighter jet flew overhead in remembrance of September 11.

And if you look at the clouds, you can see what appears to be an American flag in the jet’s trail.

A memorable moment during a day of exploring the history of the Space Coast.

Most people know Port Canaveral for its cruise ships, but there’s a lot more happening around the port.
