Plans so good they’ll haunt you 👻

Port Gamble Ghost Conference is back Nov. 6–8, and if you’ve never been, here’s the lay of the land.

Most of the action happens at the Port Gamble Theater, which may or may not be haunted (ask around, everyone has a story), plus the Hood Canal Vista Pavilion down the street. It’s less haunted, but the view makes up for it. Fans have spotted “Baby,” the ‘67 Impala from Supernatural, parked out front, so keep your eyes peeled.

If you’ve got an old family piece you’ve always wondered about, bring it. The medium gallery readings are one of the special events, and they go fast, so grab that add-on early.

Need a break between sessions? Port Gamble General Store is right across the street, and the museum is tucked in the back. Word is it gets a little active in there 👀

For dinner, Poulsbo and Kingston are each about 15 minutes away. We love a burger and a pint at Brass Kraken Pub or a quick waterfront bite at Peter and Daphne White before heading back for a night investigation.

Staying over? Fairfield Inn & Suites Poulsbo, -inn, Hotel Scandi and GuestHouse in Poulsbo all keep you close. Hauntings not guaranteed.

Before you leave, take a walk up to Buena Vista Cemetery and say hi to the locals. If you have a Sunday morning to spare, the trails at Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park are gorgeous this time of year.

Good to know: passes are $45 for the weekend or $30 for one day. Classes and investigations are add-ons, and you’ll need a pass for those. They don’t take cash at registration, so buy online ahead of time. Tickets and the full schedule are at Port Gamble, Washington or www.PortGamble.com (search Ghost Conference).

By the time you reach the Manette Free Wall, it might have changed again.

That is where Bremerton muralist FRO honed his large-scale painting skills. It is a place to experiment, speak up and make room for whoever paints next. Across the Manette bridge, you can also find his contribution to the collaborative Quincy Jones mural downtown.

Make an afternoon of the walk from Manette to Fourth and Washington. Stay for dinner; come back to the wall another day and see what has changed.

Some places ask you to slow down and look twice.

Kitsap is full of those places.

A mossy roadside frog with its own local lore. A giant wooden troll tucked into the trees. A tiny world of bonsai hiding off the highway. A bug and reptile museum that feels like a cabinet of curiosities. A waterfront state park with an old torpedo warehouse. A naval destroyer you can climb aboard. A historic town, with a 👻🏠, that looks like it wandered in from New England. A lighthouse at the edge of the Salish Sea with one of the best names in Washington.

These are the stops that make a trip feel like a story.

They are odd, beautiful, handmade, historic, a little unexpected, and very Kitsap. The kind of places you remember later because they gave you something to notice.

What if your Bremerton art walk started with an empty sketchbook?

Meet Reama Schuldt of Spread Supplies. She makes creative materials easier to find and created the Murals in Kitsap map to help the rest of us find the art already waiting in our neighborhoods.

A piece of Reama’s own work is part of the Wycoff underpass, where more than 100 people helped bring the space to life. You can also find her art hanging inside Spread Supplies and at art festivals throughout the area.

Start at Spread Supplies on Callow Avenue, choose a color, then follow the mural map at your own pace. And keep an eye on the building. Reama says another new mural will be going up on the side soon.

Fall plans, but make them Silverdale + Bremerton. 🍂

Start with an art walk. Follow the rain to a waterfall. Wander a boardwalk through the wetlands. Spend a slow afternoon by Dyes Inlet. Browse an indie bookstore. Catch a show. Find somewhere cozy for dinner.

Then stay the night instead of trying to fit Kitsap into one day.

Fall around here isn’t something to wait out. Put on the rain jacket and go.

Take the ferry. Wander a garden changing colors. Hike through the forest. Catch a show in a historic theater. Hunt for Sasquatch. Catch a film festival. Follow the salmon home. Browse local art. Get a little spooky. Then stay the night and do it all again tomorrow.

From Kingston to Port Gamble to Poulsbo, fall is a pretty good excuse to slow down, explore somewhere new and turn a day trip into a weekend away.

A day trip gets you the highlights. Staying gives you the in-between moments. 🍂

We’ll be paddling, hiking, drinking iced coffee beside a pumpkin display and quietly accepting that the Pacific Northwest operates on its own calendar.
