Halloween. New Orleans has more than 300 years of history, and a well-known haunted reputation. Fires, yellow fever epidemics, above-ground cemeteries, and stories of voodoo have all contributed to its supernatural lore. And it remains at the forefront of any visit, no matter the month.

When I visited, I found the French Quarter to be best experienced after dark on a ghost tour, when stories about the LaLaurie Mansion, Old Ursuline Convent, and other historic buildings take on a different feel. I suggest a cemetery tour to visit one of the "Cities of the Dead," such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, where generations of New Orleanians are entombed in above-ground crypts.
