🍂 Fall adventures ROCK in Prineville! ⛏️

Cooler temps, crisp air, and scenic high desert views make fall the perfect vibe for a rockhounding adventure. Lace up your hiking boots, grab your gear, and see what colorful treasures catch your eye!

📍 Rockhound Showcase: North Ochoco Reservoir Site
The adventure begins with a rugged ¼-mile hike through scenic high desert country.
Look for colorful agate and jasper on the ground below the cliffs overlooking the site. Keep an eye out for specimens with cavities filled with sparkling drusy quartz!
Some agate and jasper are attached to lava-rock boulders, making a rock hammer and chipping tools useful for collecting.

🎒 Pack Your Essentials
Layers for changing fall temperatures.
Sturdy hiking boots for the rugged terrain.

A rock hammer and chipping tools.

Eye protection and gloves.

Pedal into pure Central Oregon magic on the Crooked River Canyon Scenic Bikeway!

Start in Prineville and wind your way through open ranch country before the canyon closes in around you—towering basalt walls, jagged cliffs, and the sparkling Crooked River leading the way. Keep your eyes up: golden eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, and mule deer all call this dramatic landscape home. 🦅🦌

This 37-mile out-and-back ride climbs gently toward Prineville Reservoir and ends at Big Bend Campground—perfect for a photo stop, a riverside break, or simply soaking in those jaw-dropping canyon views. 🌄

Know before you go: The route is paved and rated moderate, but portions of the highway are narrow and curvy with limited shoulder—ride alert, wear bright gear, and share the road.

🔥 Exploring Burned Areas? Know Before You Go.

Wildfire can dramatically change the landscape, and even after the flames are gone, burned areas can still have hidden hazards. If you’re exploring trails, roads, rivers, or recreation areas affected by wildfire, take a few extra precautions.
Remember the 4 Steps for Burned Area Safety:

👀 LOOK UP
Watch for falling rocks, weakened trees, and branches—especially on slopes or when traveling below burned areas. Rain and wind can increase these hazards.

🥾 LOOK DOWN
Wait until deep mud has dried before using trails and roads. Roads, bridges, and trails may have been damaged or weakened by fire.

🌲 LOOK AROUND
Stay alert to changing conditions. Burned landscapes can be more susceptible to flooding, erosion, falling trees, and landslides, particularly after rain or snow.

🌊 LOOK BELOW
Near rivers and other waterways, watch for hidden hazards beneath the surface, including submerged trees and debris that can strike, snag, or trap swimmers and boaters.

The landscape may look safe, but conditions can change quickly. Stay aware, follow posted closures and warnings, and check local conditions before heading out.
