The Beartooth Highway (U.S. Route 212) is one of the most dangerous yet breathtaking roads in the United States. Stretching across southern Montana and northern Wyoming, the highway climbs through the rugged Beartooth Mountains near Yellowstone National Park. Built in the 1930s, the road reaches elevations of nearly 11,000 feet, making it one of the highest paved highways in North America. While the scenery attracts thousands of tourists every year, the route is famous for its sharp switchbacks, steep cliffs, sudden weather changes, and narrow lanes that challenge even experienced drivers.

One of the greatest dangers of the Beartooth Highway is its unpredictable mountain weather. Snowstorms can occur even during summer months, reducing visibility and creating icy road conditions. Strong winds and dense fog are also common at high elevations, making driving especially risky. Because of heavy snowfall, sections of the highway are usually closed during winter and may not reopen until late spring. Drivers who underestimate the harsh climate can quickly find themselves in dangerous situations far from help.

The road’s design also contributes to its reputation as a hazardous highway. Tight curves, steep grades, and dramatic drop-offs leave little room for mistakes. In some areas, there are minimal guardrails protecting vehicles from the cliffs below. Motorcyclists and RV drivers must be particularly cautious because sudden turns and narrow shoulders can easily lead to accidents. Wildlife such as elk, mountain goats, and bears may unexpectedly cross the roadway, adding another layer of danger for travelers.

Despite these risks, the Beartooth Highway remains a popular destination because of its extraordinary natural beauty. Travelers are rewarded with stunning views of alpine lakes, glaciers, forests, and snow-covered peaks. Many people consider the highway an unforgettable adventure and one of the most scenic drives in America. However, experts strongly recommend checking weather reports, driving slowly, and preparing emergency supplies before attempting the journey. The Beartooth Highway is both a marvel of engineering and a reminder of how powerful and unpredictable nature can be.

“You must choose, but choose wisely…” -Grail Knight

Nobody wants slippy-sloppy. Or was it sloppy-slippy? Either way, taking the wrong footwear on the trail can quickly turn a fun hike into a painful one. Before heading out, research the route and terrain so you can choose the right gear for your adventure. Heels, open-toed shoes, and flip-flops are not ideal for hiking trails. For dirt or gravel trails, opt for sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes with good traction and ankle support. For paved or urban pathways, comfortable sneakers or tennis shoes are usually a better fit. Your feet will thank you later.

Now, to be fair, it's ! Flip-flops are great for beach parks, the pool, short walks, getting lost in the parking lot, or just embracing vacation mode. But rocky trails, waterfalls, uneven terrain, being chased by a herd of bison, mud, and steep inclines? That’s where things can get a little…well, slippy. Also sloppy.

Make good choices.
