Great Smoky Mountains National Park will observe a fee‑free day tomorrow, June 14, in honor of Flag Day.

While the Smokies does not charge an entrance fee, we’re joining other national parks in waiving parking tag requirements for the day.

Visitors will not need a parking tag on June 14, but please remember to park only in legal, designated spaces. Enjoy the Smokies safely this holiday.

We ❤️ our wildlife that call the Smoky Mountains home! 🐻 Check out these great reminders from Visit Gatlinburg to keep yourself and our bears safe!

We couldn't let National Black Bear Day go by without appreciating the bears that call the Great Smoky Mountains home (from a safe distance of at least 50 yards away, of course).

Please remember to do your part to keep yourself safe and the bears wild.

🐻 Never feed them. It is illegal and dangerous for you and them.
🐻 Pick up after yourself and use the bear-resistant trash bins around town.
🐻 Do NOT approach them. Stay at least 50 yards (about 10 car lengths) away.
🐻 Lock all doors and windows, even your car.
🐻 Do not block the roadway to take a photo or video.
🐻 Follow all posted notices and instructions from officials.

Looking for a hike in the Smokies that highlights Appalachian culture?

Begin your journey at Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area, cross the one‑way bridge, and follow the Metcalf Bottoms Trail toward the historic Little Greenbrier School and Walker Sisters Cabin. This peaceful walk invites you to step back in time and is about 4 miles roundtrip, ending at one of the park’s most famous historic homesteads.

If you are looking for a shorter route, you can drive the short gravel road off Wear Cove Gap Road—just beyond the picnic area—to the Little Greenbrier School parking area. Starting your hike here reduces the distance to just over 3 miles roundtrip. Please use caution: the gravel road is narrow and steep, and parking at the school is limited.
