Wine Spotlight #18: La Chablisienne Chablis Le Finage (Chablis, France)
Sometimes a wine tells two stories at once.
The 2023 Le Finage opened with a surprisingly ripe, expressive nose of apricot, underripe peach, pineapple, lemon peel and flowers. On the palate, Chablis changed the conversation: high acidity, gravel, flint, smoke and a powerful drying grip quickly took over.
There is a lot to like here. Pronounced intensity, genuine complexity and a long finish earned 88 points, but the powerful stony character currently dominates the fruit enough to keep the wine from feeling completely balanced. We've enjoyed earlier vintages of Le Finage that felt more integrated, so we're curious what another year or two might do for the 2023.
At $26, though, this remains very good value.
We paired it with lemon-and-parsley chicken, slightly sweet collards and sweet potatoes. The wine's acidity and citrus were terrific with the chicken, while its intensity easily held up across the plate.
