For the first time ever, a team will be playing for a Super Bowl title in its home stadium. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will “host” the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV.

To finish up this week of hockey posts, I’m flashing back to January 2017, when the NHL All-Star Game came to my hometown and Staples Center. The game is the culmination of a three-day smorgasbord of hockey that includes a skills competition (fun to watch if you enjoy the finer points of the game) and a FanFest full of exhibits and interactive games.

There probably won’t be another NHL All-Star Game until 2023 (assuming NHL players play in the 2022 Winter Olympics) but if you get a chance to go, I highly recommend you check it out. It’s the biggest celebration of hockey that the league will put in each year, and there’s fun things to do no matter which team you support.

KeyBank Center in Buffalo has gone by several names over the years but continues to be a cool place to visit for NHL fans. It’s been rough for the Sabres in recent years but the fan atmosphere is great nonetheless, and there’s a few interesting things to check out outside the arena as well. Oh, and you can sample a lot of Buffalo’s famous food at the arena!

I’ve made two visits to Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa and had a grand time on both occasions. Its location, not close to Ottawa’s city center, is a big drawback, but I found using the bus easy enough.

It’s possible, though, that the Senators will get a new arena closer to downtown in the future — which means I’ll just have to make another visit! (Besides, it’s my dream to skate on the Rideau Canal someday.)

Hockey in Nashville might seem like a curious thing to outsiders but one visit to Bridgestone Arena will change that perception quickly. They love their Preds in Smashville and going to a game is a fun experience — the fans are a big reason for that.

As a bonus, much of downtown’s nightlife is at the arena’s doorstep so you can easily get your h***y tonk on before or after Preds games.

I like watching a lot of sports but most people who know me know my true love is hockey. 🏒 I’m pretty stoked about the NHL season beginning this week so I thought I’d share some of my hockey travel experiences in recent years.

First up: Nationwide Arena in Columbus is part of a bustling area of the city called the Arena District, and when the Blue Jackets are doing well the place is hoppin’. Just remember that when the Jackets score, that cannon will go off and it’s LOUD.

It’s definitely worth a visit to Ohio’s capital to check out a game! If you’d like to know more, read our guide here: https://itinerantfan.com/itinerary/nationwide-arena/

Here’s a flashback to one of my most recent road trips in January, when I saw a Winnipeg Jets game at Bell MTS Place. I’m sure glad I went because I’ve now checked off every NHL arena in Canada. Given the current circumstances, who knows when I would have another opportunity to go north of the border for sports?

You can read my Bell MTS Place guide here: https://itinerantfan.com/itinerary/bell-mts-place/

BTW, Winnipeg isn’t an easy place to get to from the States but I do recommend it if you ever get the opportunity. Interesting sights, friendly people and a surprisingly diverse amount of food choices.

Last season I got to visit the home of the Buffalo Bills at Bills Stadium (at the time it was known as New Era Field). And I have to say it was one of the wildest experiences I’ve had at an NFL game, in a good way. Buffalo fans love their team, and they know how to have a good time! That’s a winning combination.

The Bills had a pretty big win the other night over the Steelers — it’s just too bad the stadium wasn’t packed, cause it would’ve been *roaring*. You can check out our guide to Bills Stadium here: https://itinerantfan.com/itinerary/bills-stadium/

Last year I was thrilled to attend the annual Teddy Bear Toss game for the Ontario Reign, the LA Kings’ top affiliate. The Teddy Bear Toss is a minor-league hockey tradition in which fans throw stuffed animals onto the ice, which are then donated to charity. You can read all about my experience here: https://itinerantfan.com/2019/12/23/teddy-bear-toss-attending-a-grand-minor-league-hockey-tradition/

Since there are no games this fall, the Reign are holding a virtual Teddy Bear Toss to benefit Toys for Tots and Feeding America. I’m proud to make a donation to their cause. Please consider doing the same by visiting bit.ly/VirtualTeddyToss.
