VERY GOOD fishermen endure less than perfect conditions to get a couple fives before the high winds arrived.

And I was worried we would not have enough wind…

Quality fish on an inland and the big lake…

Nothing over six lbs but a very good average.

Half were postspawn and the “chunks” were prespawners.

Fun stuff…

Busy week going back and forth from the inland’s to the bay. Topwater smallies could be days away and I’ll find out soon.

Fat prespawners are in the staging areas and ,soon, some postspawners will show up on the bay.

July/August is always a busy time for us as our bassing goes from good to great but this year it will be HECTIC!

Our return customers have learned that the entire bass population will be focused on getting fat and this is the time to be here. Hence, a very full calendar with just a few dates remaining.

Surprise of the week was a big whitefish and bunch of Cisco for the smoker. Fun change of pace.

Bear with me as I adjust to this new phone.
So far, lost photos, lost marine apps, and missed messages. WOW!”

A 7.05 lb smallmouth on a not-so-perfect day.
The stage these fish are in calls for some wind--any wind!
Just not glass...
When the surface would "wrinkle" the fish were catchable (6 others up to 5 lbs).

On a previous day...
The inland lakes are much more forgiving on a flat day as they are very close to going on surface baits (25 up to 4 lbs in 4 hrs).

Tomorrow's guest will have wind and I'm feeling really good about it.

BOAT INSPECTION FRIDAY and we're good to go for a couple more years.

After a few days off for family and friends nothing seems to have changed--hardbaits are the recipe for big fish and numbers.
With wind it has been very good. On the days with light and variable winds we have continued to move to the windy areas. Photos show bass up to 6.24.

In July and August we welcome light winds but seeing the words "light and variable" now isn't the best news. Our homemade creatures (soft plastic) are starting to gain momentum and will soon be our first option.

Likely the biggest freshwater fish I've seen was a sturgeon on Thursday. It was a far distance from any deep water and appeared to be healthy.

The big lake and inland lakes are both very productive.

Enjoy and be safe!

MEMORIAL DAY 2026
There are the fallen we knew and the countless number we didn't know. Today is the day to remember all the fallen.
Again a shout-out to the many communities who go the extra mile to display the flags.

A new friend from Illinois jumped onboard for an eventful 6-hour trip.
Tom caught around 30 and his biggest was just shy of 6 lbs. This guy can fish!

Be safe my friends. Crowded waters out there!

Moving on to Phase Two of 2026 a couple days early provided quite the experience. It was COLD early in the day.

While deep fishing for a couple hours a 6.82 and a 5.98 were caught.
The big surprise was a 7.85 lb walleye!
There were many short strikes as they were feeding on very small minnows. Only five fish caught deep but all good ones.

Shallow fishing midmorning in high winds found some nice fish with only one over four lbs. At noon I moved to an extremely windy, cold, flat point and there was a massive school of baitfish.

Skipping the details and methods for now, five fish were caught.
The best three were 6.04, 5.55 and 4.90.

What a day! Next day's client was in for a real treat...

We had the wind we like for this type of fishing. Power fishing at its finest.

And on a quick four-and-a-half hour outing we had 18 smallies up to five lbs.

Another fun day.

New waters the next couple days.

A weekend trip on a very busy lake with less than ideal conditions produced this personal best 6.70 pounder.

As the first trimester of 2026 smallmouth fishing is within a few days of ending, a few observations...

Well over 400 smallies caught starting on April 10
One fishing method skipped as shallow fishing happened early
28.19 was best five fish weight, several over 24 lbs
The average size seems better than recent years
Warm weather has brought many more boats to the lake
Weekends (unless bad weather) are a real challenge now

I'm already thinking about the first trimester of 2027 but until then
"BIG lake here we come!"

Be safe my friends.
