The number one question I get about the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival is: “Why is it in August when it’s so hot?”

The answer: August is an amazing time for birding here! There is peak hummingbird diversity, and we get special bird visitors from the tropics. All the animals are taking advantage of the abundance from monsoons. Plus, southbound migration is beginning, so we can see an incredible mix of birds.

I spent the day in Patagonia and picked up several lifers, saw amazing wildlife, soaked in gorgeous vistas, and met some of the nicest people.

If birding in Southern Arizona isn’t on your to-do list yet, it should be!

Tucson locals know that our iconic signage is reflective of the city's character and history. In a tribute to the Tucson community, miniatures artist Jorge Ruiz has recreated some of the city's most iconic signs in the exhibit "Signs of Community: Signage of the Old Pueblo in Miniature."

The exhibit features landmarks like The Loft Cinema's retro letterboard to the classic "Ugly but Honest" sign in the 5 Points neighborhood. His work captures every last detail of these beloved signs, celebrating their well-worn facades down to the last scuff mark.

You can see the full exhibit now at The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures until January 11, 2026. It is the museum's first bilingual exhibit, with information available in both English and Spanish. Follow Jorge's upcoming work at and learn more about the exhibit at https://bit.ly/40C5shO

To celebrate Tucson’s upcoming 250th birthday, the City of Tucson - Government partnered with local organizations to commission four murals by talented local artists: Pen Macias (The Desert Pen), Joe Pagac, Camila Ibarra (Camila On Canvas), and Ignacio Garcia (Ignacio Garcia). Each mural reflects the artists’ interpretations of over a millennia of culture and history in this region.

The 250+ celebration honors not only the founding of the Spanish presidio in 1775, but also the rich history of the indigenous peoples who have inhabited this region for over thousands of years. For more information on the Tucson 250+ celebration, visit https://bit.ly/4kXKgu1
