Welcome back to Back of House Buddies! Today we are happy to introduce one of our American Kestrels, Squawkbox (SB for short)! Swipe to the second slide to see what inspired his name! 🔊

SB was found in an abandoned nest and raised by a falconer. He imprinted on people and is non-releasable, so he came to live with us at The Wild Center in 2010.

The kestrel is the smallest and most common falcon in North America. They are also the only bird that can hover in place mid-air to scan the ground for prey! This helps them find prey in open areas that don’t have any places to perch.

While SB does not come out for programs, our other kestrels love to come out for Creature Features and Animal Encounters! When you visit, you may get a chance to meet one of them.

Starting tomorrow, September 1, The Wild Center will be open daily from 10 am to 5 pm through October 31.

You’ve met the Trolls. Now meet the artist behind them.

Thomas Dambo, the internationally acclaimed recycle artist behind TROLLS: Save the Humans, is coming to Tupper Lake for a special evening of stories, creativity and conversation.

Join us on Thursday, September 10, at the Tupper Lake Bandshell at Flanders Park as Thomas shares stories from his creative journey, his larger-than-life Troll sculptures around the world and the inspiration behind his work with reclaimed materials.

The evening will also include a book signing following the talk. Books can be purchased at shop.wildcenter.org or in person at the event.

🎟️ Lawn tickets are available for $15 per ticket. Children ages 4 and under are free.

Gates open at 5 pm with the talk beginning at 6 pm. Book signing and meet-and-greet to follow.

Tickets are limited and can be booked at wildcenter.org/events/dambotalk.

Experience the Wooden Canopy 🌲

Endlessly optimistic, Ibbi Pip is a friend to all animals—and she still believes there’s hope for humans.

As she makes her way through the forest, Ibbi hangs colorful birdhouses in the trees, hoping they’ll inspire humans to notice, appreciate and care for the creatures we share this world with. Her work may never be finished, but Ibbi believes it’s worth doing.

You can experience Ibbi Pip and her story in Thomas Dambo’s TROLLS: Save the Humans, on view at The Wild Center through October 31.

🎶 Listen for Ibbi’s story in Wooden Canopy, a custom composition by Eric Sturr & co. As you listen, you may hear Ibbi hanging birdhouses, birds returning to the forest and spring peepers reminding us that nature is resilient—and that the work of making the world a better place begins with trying.

The Wild Center is in bloom! 🌸🌻🌼

Have you ever seen this vertical pinkish-purple flower before (shown on the first slide)? Known as Showy Tick-Trefoil, this plant is native to the Eastern half of the United States. Not only do they add beauty to the landscapes, but they are also favored by pollinators and birds who enjoy their protein-rich seeds. As a member of the legume family, they can also assist in the nitrogen fixation process, allowing for richer, healthier soil.

Watch out for its imposter, though (second slide)! Although similar in appearance to Showy Tick-Trefoil, Purple Loosestrife is invasive the United States. Because of its rapid seed production and growth ability, Purple Loosestrife is quick to outnumber native plants.
