An elder presses sandalwood paste onto a thin stick by hand, rolls it smooth, sets it to dry in a bowl of sand. This incense will burn at the pagoda, or keep mosquitoes away at night, same stick, two purposes.

This was one morning outside Siem Reap, on a slow bike ride through rice fields most tourists never see. We watched a man climb barefoot up a palm tree for sap, women weave palm leaves into roof panels, made incense sticks with our own hands, tried warm palm cakes, then made Num Banh Chok before sitting down to a full local lunch.

No hotel breakfast could give you a morning like this.

By the end of one day, I had stood in front of three faces of Angkor, and none of them looked like what I expected.

First, Angkor Wat in the morning, the silhouette everyone already knows before they land in Cambodia. Then Bayon, where enormous stone faces watch you from every tower, calm and a little unsettling at the same time. Last, Ta Prohm, where a tree grew straight through the temple walls, and the roots are the only thing still holding some of it up.

Three temples, one full day, and each one surprised me in a different way.

First night in Siem Reap, before you ever reach pub street, watch this.

A dinner show of Khmer classical dance, Apsara among them, gold headdresses catching the light with every turn of the wrist, each dance telling its own old story.

Most first time visitors go straight to pub street on arrival night and miss this completely.

I always send my guests to a dinner show first, proper Khmer food, then the dancing begins as the sun goes down.

A tree has grown straight over this temple, its roots wrapped across the stone like it is the only thing holding the ruin up.

This is Cambodia beyond Angkor Wat, an ancient temple called Sambor Prei K*k, slowly being reclaimed by the forest for centuries.

It sits on the road between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, along with a silver making village, an old royal capital on a quiet mountain, and a lunch stop only locals know.

Most people flying in only see Angkor Wat. I build this into a full day on the way there.

Just 2 hours from Phnom Penh, there is a canyon that took nature centuries to carve, and almost no tourist has stood inside it.

I still remember the silence there. No vendors calling out, no other visitors, just wind moving through walls shaped by rain over more years than anyone can count. Late afternoon, the stone turns burnt orange, like standing inside old ruins that were never built.

It is only 100KM from the city, along the way to Kirirom National Park, close enough for a single day trip.

Most people do not know it exists because it is not on the way anyone stops. I take small groups here, and I will show you exactly where to turn.

A wonderful traveler from the UK V. Whitelocks (.venetia), went looking for a mountain summit. What she found instead was hidden in the jungle for years.

The wreckage of a plane, crashed years ago, still sitting quietly in the jungle, deep in the forest on Cambodia's highest mountain.

She was not here simply to tick Cambodia off a list. She came looking for an experience worth carrying home and telling the world about.

She hiked Phnom Aural, walked deep into a forest most tourists never see, and discovered a story that became entirely her own.

This is what makes guiding in Cambodia so special to me. I get to take curious travelers beyond the usual places and into moments they never expected to find.

She has now shared her experience with the world.
Her story is in the comments, along with the trail she hiked to get there.
