Most recent 3 day and 2 night trip on the Baskahegan Stream where East Grand Outdoor Education students put into practice skills learned throughout the school year and doing some campsite maintenance along the way. Students took turns solo paddling, poling, learning to persevere through bugs, hot weather and long paddles as well as how to work with others. Maine guide and instructor Tammi Matula did some readings about the Baskahegan Watershed history out of the book 'What's in a Name' as written by Ryder Scott with help from local East Grand students and others back in the 90s. Kam and Mason caught a small mouth bass while fly fishing (first time) and doing so with a streamer fly they tied in an OE class this past winter with Elbridge Cleaves. Gavin put into practice his mentoring skills as a 2nd year student. Mason was awarded his LL Bean back pack and other gear by Tammi Matula for successfully accomplishing the following.
*Tying 6 knots in under 2 minutes
*Build a fire with a spark and boil an egg in a paper cup in under 20 minutes.
*Map & Compass skills including a bushwhack
*Setting up the climbing wall and belaying checks and commands
*Set up a tarp shelter utilizing 4 knots
*First aid course and Hunter safety
