Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years since a morning that changed our nation forever.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger when others were fleeing, the families whose lives were forever changed, and all those who continue to carry the weight of that day.

At Spooks & Legends, we spend much of our time telling stories of the past — stories of people, places, tragedy, courage, and the memories that remain long after a moment has passed.

But some history needs no embellishment.

Today is simply a day to remember.

To honor the lives lost.
To recognize the courage shown.
And to remember the humanity that brought people together in the days that followed.

May we never forget.

On this Labor Day in 1939, Williamsburg lost one of the men who worked so hard to bring its colonial past back to life.

The Rev. W. A. R. Goodwin, a driving force behind the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, died at his home on September 7, 1939. The following day, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. sent a telegram to Goodwin’s son, Rutherford, offering his condolences.

One line still carries the weight of that moment:

“He has immortalized himself in the restoration.”

Goodwin’s final resting place is inside Bruton Parish Church, in the nave before the Rector’s Pew. Thousands of visitors pass through Williamsburg each year, but how many know the story of the man buried within those historic walls?

Have you ever wondered about the little house standing next door to the Peyton Randolph House, often called the most haunted house in Williamsburg?

The Grissell Hay Lodging House is an original 18th-century survivor, with portions believed to date to around 1720. After Dr. Peter Hay died in 1766, his widow, Grissell Hay, turned the home into a lodging house for travelers, servants, and their horses.

Over the years, paranormal investigators have reported disembodied voices calling for help, shadow figures, the sounds of children crying, and even the apparition of an elderly woman in a red dress.

But is the Grissell Hay House truly haunted?

Williamsburg has a funny way of following us home—even long after the ghost tours are over. 👻

Every now and then, a little piece of the past finds its way into our hands, and this one was too good not to share. Check out this gem from 1967: a Colonial Williamsburg candle-molding kit, still carrying all that wonderful old-fashioned charm.

We can’t help wondering where it’s been for nearly sixty years. Who bought it? Who opened it? Who made candles with it? Did it sit forgotten in an attic, tucked away in a closet, passed from one family to another?

Objects like this are why we appreciate history so much. Sometimes the smallest things survive long enough to become storytellers themselves.
