The gallows of Colonial Williamsburg were likely perched northeast of the Capitol—near modern-day Capitol Landing Road—where criminals, pirates, and the condemned met their grim fate under the public eye.

Why is 3 am called the Devil's Hour or the Witch's Hour? One scientific theory suggests that it is the time when most people are in deep sleep, between 3 am and 4 am, so the immune system is the weakest. Most deaths are said to occur during this hour as well.

A second theory is much more religious. Since it was recorded that Christ passed away at 3 pm, the Devil's Hour is said to come at 3am, as a mockery to Christ. There is also a phenomenon called "the mocking of the Trinity" where paranormal events occur in threes, such as 3 scratches, three knocks on the wall, etc.
